Sherri reached a hand into her sodden leggings back pocket, half expecting to see a fresh lineup of notifications on her phone screen. But it was shattered and dead.
"Umm, broke my phone," she mumbled, acting as though she was telling her mother it was rainy outside instead of breaking an impressive feat of technology.
"We'll think about about getting you a new one... next Christmas. Meanwhile you can use this five dollar phone." Emily handed her an old touch screen phone with all of the most basic functions, calling, texting, photos. "You'll have to use the lap top for Pic Flip now."
Sherri almost grumbled, but received the phone with a smile and a "Thanks, Mom."
"Why were you out in the rain anyways?" Emily asked a very good question.
"Long story," Sherri said, holding up a pink-painted finger. "After I shower."
She shed the sodden clothes and was thankful of the heat of the water, she had been shivering from being cold and wet ever since she had arrived in the IHOP parking lot.
She changed into a grey thermal-wear turtleneck and loose black yoga pants, accepting the fact that sunny clothing could be defeated by the weather. She slouched on the couch and stared at the vacant screen of the television, really wanting to curl up with tea and a good book, but having a lot on her mind right now. Well, her mom brought the tea at least. Chocolate mint. She breathed it in. It really did smell pretty chocolatey. It was weird they could make mint leaves smell that way. She wondered if her cats ever would like mint tea, or at least catnip tea.
Dorcha, a fluffy black kitty, turned into a rumbling warm bundle on her lap. His name would have been named 'prionsa na dorchadais' which is 'prince of darkness' translated to Irish, for his color and ruthless pillow stealing, but it really was rather a difficult name to yell when scolding him for jumping on the counter.
Emily lay beside Sherri in silence, then leaned back. "So, what happened today?"
