«We Could Be Legends»

"Yeah. I think so," Indigo turned her pale face to the window, staring at the hurried traffic. "Yeah, they're definitely leaving," she added. "Normally there wouldn't be much traffic at this hour."

"I don't blame them. If I didn't know what was going on, I would probably also want to leave." Toby mumbled.

Isn't that what we're doing? Indigo wondered.
"We're more likely to be discovered at that battlefield now. I'll bet even the Pure are leaving now." That last statement sounded disconnected somehow.

Toby nodded. "But I don't think there's anywhere that doesn't have iron that's out of the way. So we're going to have to risk it."

"Well the city has it. But we aren't going inside," Indigo wasn't sure why she supplied that useless fact. "We're getting somewhere," she added. The city skyline was fading into the distance, replaced by a few scattered houses and a rough, wasted landscape. The few trees looked bitter as they seemed to repine for their basic needs to be met.
The farther you got from the lush, groomed city, the farther you got from its water. And this place seemed in want. The only vegetation other than the sad little trees were thorny things, and bushes not quite alive after all. Yesterday's rain had done little to quench this land's thirst.

Toby was lost in thought as he drove. I hope Charlie is okay, and didn't get crushed by something. Images flashed through his mind of Charlie's dead body, and he clenched the steering wheel. Don't think of that, he'll be fine.
But what if he isn't? This will have been your fault. You should've killed Mapleshade while you had the chance. Now she's unleashed this thing, and it will kill everyone.
But if I killed her everyone else would still be dead. Wolf said that she will still find a way of killing everyone. This isn't my fault.
But what if it is? You're just a coward scared of death.
Toby reached out and turned the radio back on. After clicking through the channels and only finding news stations, he turned it off. Jessi looked at him with concern, and then looked out the window, still watching him through the reflection.

Indigo took another glance out the window. "The cars have thinned out. We still have a few going this way, though." A wild, bushy place came up. Around here, the rocky land was hilly and dramatic, like a giant had shoved a pickaxe in the hard ground and stabbed it a couple of times, shoving up pieces of the earth. It was a reddish place too, but for one. There were still houses lining the road, as eager to escape the city as the fleeing people.

Soon they arrived at the cave. Toby parked a little ways away from everyone else and turned the engine off. "You guys go. I'll join in a few minutes." He said, and grabbed his backpack. Jessi gave him one last concerned looked, and then went to join the others. "Hey. Traffic was terrible." She said, looking around.

Peter stumbled out of whatever van he had been in and looked around with a dazed expression. There was blood everywhere, and the vegetation was trampled and muddy. He walked numbly over to the others in the scattered group and looked around at their battered faces helplessly. "Ok," he said, his voice trembling slightly, "does anyone know what the heck is going on?" The question wasn't targeted at anyone in particular, and it could be assumed that he was addressing the trees.

Brisa turned away from Wolfram and Misty at the sound of Toby’s car pulling up, her bright green eyes focusing on the confused expression on Peter’s face, her emotions mirroring his own. A wave of feeling swept over her, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to cry, or yell, or curl up into a little ball and give up. Not now! This is the worst time to be emotional! Exasperated and stressed out and anything but happy, she headed back over to the rock and sat down on it, returning her head to her hands to hide the annoying tears and coming to the realization that Connor still hadn’t arrived. With a good amount of effort she blinked the offending salty substance away and dragged herself to her feet, walking back over to the group. “Look, did any of you see Connor on your way here? He was following our car with Misty and River but he still hasn’t gotten here.” She explained to the three who had just showed up.
