«We Could Be Legends»

Shadow couldn't figure out what hurt more. Frozen blood, a kick to the back of his knee, teeth tearing his leg, or his now broken wrist. Somehow, the once almost unstoppable young man was now taken down by four teenagers and a shifter.
The gun went off, but the bullet never embedded itself in Shadow's skull. With the little strength left in him, he forced flame to surround him, wrenching his hands and legs away from River and the four teenagers. The flames swallowed the bullet, melting it, encasing Shadow in a protective barrier. But it fell suddenly as Shadow saw, through the sea of black, a boy holding Mapleshade by the scruff.
And he shot away from the ground, abandoning the fight to protect his leader.

Swerving so hard he almost fell, Wolfram changed corse, skidding to a screeching halt in front of Toby. He stared at Mapleshade, Bleddyn's gun pressed against the cats skull. If it had been any other time, Wolfram would have felt a stab of horror or fear. But now, adrenaline pumped so furiously through his veins, he wasn't sure he could feel more horrified or frightened.
Wolfram had wanted to take her down in the fire ring. But now, the she-cat staring at him with cold loathing, he almost couldn't bring himself to say yes. "I...I...just...do it." With a jolt he was reminded that Mapleshade had killed his mother, and so many innocent people.
But neither Indigo nor Bleddyn had time to pull the trigger. A tall shadow shoved Wolfram out of the way, and Wolfram staggered to avoid Bleddyn, and wrenched Mapleshade from Toby's grasp.
"Do not move." Wolfram hissed, a growl, very much feline-like, escaping his throat. This seemed to stop the tall shadow, as he stopped, and turned to face them.
He clutched Mapleshade tightly to his chest, arms wrapped protectively around her. He did seem frightened, and thoroughly so. It registered that he could not be all that much older then Wolfram himself. Blood and scratches stained his face, his Pure armor ripped and his arm torn open from something much larger then himself.
"Please don't kill her. Please."
"Give me that cat!"
But Shadow turned heel, and disappeared through the sea of black.
But Wolfram only turned to Indigo, Toby and Bleddyn. "He's not going to make it far. That ex-Pure girl and a few shifters are stalking in the woods there, making sure no Pure leave alive. Come on, and bring anyone you see from the group!"
Indigo sprinted towards the pair of them. That's stupid. I can find purchase right now. They'll never get away.
She reached into her pocket, fingers digging in the dirt-lined jeans pockets. Aha.
Indigo's fingers closed around a small, powerful object, and lifted it up. A tazer.
She fired at a rather ineffective place, the Shadow's left leg. But the pulse went throughout his body, and more importantly, through the body of the little cat in his arms. Sometimes guns aren't always the answer. This has a bigger impact.

"Hey!" Toby yelped as Mapleshade was ripped out of his grasp, standing up quickly. He grabbed his gun but before he could shoot, Indigo tazed them. "You've had that Taser this entire time, and you just now thought it was a good idea to use it?" He asked. He shook his head, which he regretted as a wave of dizziness washed over him. "Never mind. Better now than never." He walked over to Shadow and Mapleshade, pointing his gun at the small cat. Neither of them were moving, and he hoped the electricity somehow killed them.

The last few days had all been disgusting, though. She had killed more people than she ever wanted to see with so minor an injury as a paper cut.
But Indigo unsurprisingly had no sympathy for this orange and black cat. "Do we have to ask? She deserves it." But still she glanced back at Wolfram. (Cluckcluck, I technically need your permission to kill a character. :p )

Mapleshade didn't know what happened. One second she was ripped from Toby's hands, and the next she was held against the rapidly beating heart of Shadow, and then suddenly dropped as they ran. She whirled around, hackles rising as she realized Shadow had dropped down, twitching and gasping.
She shifted as Toby approached, ripping her belt in the haste to pull her gun from where it was stashed, standing in front of Shadow. "Do not touch him. Do. Not. Touch. Shadow." Her voice was thick and harsh; and instead of wavering beneath the fact she was at the aiming point of multiple lethal weapons, only fury fueled her voice.
She spared Wolfram a half glance as he approached. He hesitated, glancing around warily. How is he still standing?!

~

Wolfram stopped just a few inches behind Toby, his gaze flickering around wildly. "Kill him, I'll take her down." His mouth moved very little as he hissed into Toby's ear. Slowly, he stepped forward, ears pinned flat to his skull. Acutely aware he still held the knife clutched in his left hand, he cleared the distance between himself and Mapleshade, his gaze trained on her even though he was acutely aware of Taylor just behind Maple. "I'll give you what you want Mapleshade. I'll give you the key. Just lower your gun."
Slowly, her eye glittering with bemusement, she lowered the gun, but still clutched it tightly. Revenge is sweet. Especially when your enemy is stupid.
Taylor snatched Mapleshade's gun-hand suddenly, and there was a sickening sound of crunching bones as Taylor snapped Mapleshade's wrist and yanked her backwards.
"Indigo, Wolf, help me with her!"

Toby jumped as Wolfram came up behind him, briefly thinking it was a Pure member. He nodded, and moved around Mapleshade. He hesitated, pointing his gun at Shadow. It felt wrong to him. Shadow looked too young, and the thought of killing him made Toby sick, especially since he couldn't fight back. I shouldn't feel guilty. He's working with the group that has killed tons of innocent people. "I'm sorry..." he said quietly, pulling the trigger.

"Well I sure thought the multiple guns pointed at her her were enough to stop her!" Indigo hissed through clenched teeth. As the tortoiseshell cat slipped out of the man's grip, she hesitated. Should she continue to keep the Shadow down, or point her weapon at Mapleshade? She decided to keep a fierce grip on her tazer as Toby moved in for the kill, and only moved with Wolfram's plea for help. She put down the tazer, and, with a shaky hand, fired at Mapleshade's middle.

Wolfram flattened his ears down further as Mapleshade screeched, both in agony of her broken wrist and now that Toby had shot Shadow. That's what you get for killing Tayn and Thomas and Jenna and Mom!
He lunged forward, snatching Mapleshade by the arms and restraining her. She struggled furiously, kicking the ground in futile attempts to get away.
"Let me go, let me go!" She sobbed, finally wrenching herself free from Wolfram's grasp and pelting to Shadow's side. "No, no, no, no! Shadow, Shadow, sweetheart, wake up. Please..." She scrambled up to him, her hand now coated with crimson liquid in her frantic attempts to stop the bleeding.
But there wasn't any time to save him.
Shadow's chest rose in a futile attempt to draw in breath, and as it fell, it didn't rise again. There was no longer life force beneath the river of blood that soaked the ground and Shadow and Mapleshade's clothing and skin. Instead it just poured out until his body had no more blood to bleed.
Mapleshade whipped her head around to stare at Toby, and Wolfram was startled to see her face was stained with tears.
It was strange. He had never actually seen her cry. Not once. And it was so strange to see such a powerful woman show such a vulnerable emotion.
"He was just a boy!" She snarled as Wolfram sidled up to Toby. "He didn't deserve to die! He was just a child!"
"So are we!" Wolfram spat. "We are just children to. Yet you try and murder us. You've even killed children. I know, I saw a little Faun dead. Do you think we wanted him to die? No. Of course not. I wouldn't wish death upon someone so young, someone who could have been so powerful and successful if it hadn't been for your malicious wishes. You see, Mapleshade, you brought this upon yourself. You shouldn't have let someone so young as him fight in a war."
Mapleshade just stared at him. As if he were some sort of freak. As if realizing maybe that this was a bad idea after all. As if it were finally dawning on her that she had so little human conscience left that she had forced children to fight to their deaths.
Then there was a freezing chill that passed over him, and he realized that the chestnut haired ex-Pure girl was now beside him, and Mapleshade was struggling to her feet.
The clearing exploded in blinding light, though Wolfram didn't know the source of it. The woods burst open, and Wolfram realized more people had arrived. Multitude members and towns people.
Wolfram leapt at Mapleshade without hesitation, knife outstretched, and the chestnut haired girl glanced at the rest of the group. A hand shot forward suddenly, and there was a shriek as a Pure member froze and dropped to the ground.
"Alright, then. Stop standing over Shadow and fight. Do you want to die?"

Toby stared down and Shadow's lifeless body. He thought the bullet would've killed him instantly, but it didn't, and instead made Shadow suffer what must've felt like long, painful seconds. He desperately wanted to take it back, to not shoot Shadow, but he was already dead, and he couldn't bring him back even if he wanted to. Why did I shoot him? I shouldn't have killed him. He was too young. Mapleshade's crying made him feel so much worse.
As the battle broke out again, Toby felt paralyzed, unable to do anything but stare down at Shadow. It was only after a bullet whizzed by his head that he looked up, and shot at the oncoming Pure members.

Peter appeared beside the group. "Just kill her already!" He said, then yelped as a bullet flew by him. He disappeared just as quickly, reappearing on top of someone's head.

The Pure had surrounded a group of the Multitude. They were quickly closing in. "Do any of you have bullets?" Frosty growled. His heart was racing even faster than it usually was. The others shook their heads.
"If only I wasn't a darn bantam! Think, Frosty, think." We're trapped. Maybe if I crowed someone would hear us- His head shot up as he heard a shout.
"Hey, jerkwads!"
Some of the Pure turned to find the source of the noise. Grace grinned, sparks flying from her hands. "Eat lightning!"
The air seemed to crackle as electricity flew out of her hands and straight at the Pure.

Jessi recognized Frosty as the chicken working with the Multitude and flew down, biting a Pure member in half. She felt sick, all of the blood and bones upsetting her stomach. She turned to bite another Pure, but when she opened her mouth, she threw up blood and undigested body parts on the unsuspecting person. She winced as an arm rolled in front of Frosty, and gave him an apologetic look. She then went back to smashing the Pure, sinking her claws in their heads, killing them almost instantly.

Frosty looked at the Pure around them. Most were in a twitching heap from the electricity, but there were a few unlucky ones that had gotten their undigested comrades thrown up on them. He grimaced and stepped back from the arm. "Thanks for the help, wyvern!" Frosty shouted, his squeaky voice hopefully penetrating the wind. Next time you need to make more of an effort to remember names. He scolded himself inwardly.

Meanwhile, Grace had dashed away, zapping people left and right as she tried to find her brother in the masses. Crow followed her, shooting any Pure that tried to attack from behind.

Jessi looked back at Frosty and nodded at him. When she saw Grace, her face lit up and she flew over to her, gently bumping her arm with her nose. She must be looking for Peter. She thought, pointing in Peter's direction with her claw.
