Alec quietly regarded her, not even flinching as he heard a bang against the side of the van, instead his gaze slowly turned to it, then back at River. "Maybe." He responded shortly, giving nothing else but that.

Wolfram knew Lachlan was right. He knew, realistically, that Michael and Maple would have gone to any lengths to obliterate every single one of them. And Maple had gone to so many; killing her best friend, kidnapping a group of teenagers, nearly killing most of them and killing some. How much further would they have gone had he not stopped them, he didn't know the answer.
But he wished that the answer hadn't been death. Neither of them would have surrendered, no, they would rather have died then surrender to them, and they did just that.
But if I had known, if I had just known that they had sons, it would be different. God, I'm so stupid, I should have known that there was more then just plain hatred going on there, I'm such an idiot.
"I know," he rasped, letting his gaze drop to the ground. What do I know, though? What am I even saying?
"I just...I can't..." Can't look at him without reminding yourself that you killed his parents, that yet another child has been orphaned?
He shrugged, his hand falling away from the van. "Thank you, Lach." He gave a small smile, then moved past him towards River and Alec. Here goes nothing.
