I would recommend a gelding/to geld him, especially for your first horse and if you're not wanting to breed. How much is he listed for? Is it the horse from the previous link?

You definitely should! Years back I tried out a handful of horse forums but most of them were like, "Well I put my friend's stud colt in with my 23 year old mare do you think she's pregnant?" and "My horse is lame and the vet said he tore his tendon. If I put liniment on it can I still barrel race?" COTH is more like "Do you think false ground lines on cross country courses have contributed to the increase of rotational falls and rider fatalities in eventing?" I've learned a ton of medical stuff from browsing the care section, plus it's always nice to be able to troubleshoot if an issue comes up.

That sounds like a good place to go to when we have questions.
But, I'll admit, those two questions you put to 'mock' the other horse sites are so funny!

Horse People!!

I had always wanted horses .. took putting my kid in lessons to final realize the dream. Now, DD and I have had our two mares for about 6 years. It's been great bonding getting out and trail riding and going to local gymkhana shows. So yeah, we ride western. Well, I ride western. The kid rides everywhere bareback. It will be two years ago in June that we bought our own property and moved them home. I thought I'd ride every day, but it's about 4x a week.

About the girls: my bay, Izzy, is a 16 yo Appendix. At least that's what I was told, but she looks like she has some Standardbred in her to me .. I'll post some pics, and you all can tell me what you think? However .. that horse is high-strung and loves to run.
DD's horse, Rena, is a 25 yo QH. She's been on Pentosan injections since October for arthritis (I do make DD do them every month .. her horse and all). Since the meds kicked in the old gal has been spunky and full of herself. So glad she's feeling better.

As far as horse forums, The Chronicle of the Horse is the only place to go for real horse knowledge and discussions on everything from training to the latest medical research to ethics in the show world.

I too research advice on COTH whenever a problem crops up.

HIIII jaddip4! Welcome to the thread! 4x a week is awesome! I wish I could but with school and all the weekends (unless they're filled with sports) are my only openings, that and after school but gets a little too dark too fast this time of year to ride..but I hope to be able to ride more as riding becomes one of my top focuses (sports wise).

Pics are awesome! Anxiously awaiting! That's good that the injections are helping Rena, my QH Eclipse has arthritic knees but we haven't injected them. And it's good to hear another positive review for COTH!

Oh! How did I forget to add that?! I show hunter/jumper, show jumping, and eventing! And yes I agree very much with that. Yes! I did find the horse I was looking for! I added the longer story in my intro a few posts back..but yes! His name is Cruiser and he's a 15hh dark seal bay morgan gelding, I believe he's my heart horse and can't wait to start competing as a team with him!

Very cool! I like the little powerhouses. I had a 15.2 jumper mare that was phenomenal and could easily jump her own height. My current one is 17.2 though.

I found a very handsome stallion for sale that I coukd ride and halter show... If I keep him at my friend's she would want me to geld him. Gypsies are expensive, and I'm limiting myself to spending $2000 on my first horse. I don't think the owners would sell him for that little, though. He's a good quality one so... yeah...

Some advice, as someone who has been doing this a while and has found a lot of first horses for clients...

With your budget, look into quarter horses and paints that are moving out of the show ring for your first horse. There are two absolute last things that a new horse owner needs: the first is a stallion or recently gelded horse, and the second is a fad breed like a gypsy or a friesian.

If you want to do western stuff, you need a western horse. For that price you can get one already trained to do what you want, and you want a horse that can show you the ropes at this point. Gypsies are bred for hair and color, not for temperament or talent. They are not athletic and are widely known as not being good at anything, except perhaps pulling carts.

I won't go into the backyard breeders that are breeding that poorly-conformed stallion that desperately needs gelding. YIKES is all I'm saying on that one!

Good advice, I agree. KC was my first horse and he used to be a ranch horse, that's all we know for sure but we think he did cutting, roping etc, based on some things he's done..

Thank you! He's an excellent jumper as well and has quite to go, go. go attitude. Thus, is why were working on speed control, lol. I'm about 5' 10" so he is actually a little short for me...but it's been working out great regardless of the height.
