➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

The problem with yard dirt is that the yard is so unwilling to let go of it. A big plastic bag full of nice clean dirt ripped from the bosom of the earth, de-lumped and sieved by someone in possession of machinery is so worth the money.
I was tempted to use some of our sided compost. Anybody try that? Or perhaps even some of the unsifted stuff... I hate to use compost on birds, but I do have piles of it in our bins. I guess it could go back into the new compost pile after the birds are done scratching, rolling around and depositing nitrogen (poop) in it.

Considering using compost. Just tore down last summer’s compost pile & it has lovely, rich black dirt. The banana tree is loving being next to it. I need more by the other bananas.

I’m using shredded yard waste to collect the nitrogen. Wood chips. Working well. Then cage clean outs go to the compost.

Banana trees?! Now I am really jealous. It definitely is not warm enough here in Chicagoland for banana trees to survive, at least not looking enough to produce.

We are right on the edge of keeping the bananas alive. Zone 9a. It was an experiment that is going well. Learning about microclimates and such.

A lot of people keep birds for the eggs. I wanted poop. Sorry Kiki. Poop for the compost is working amazing. After the compost ages, I open it to the chickens and they disassemble the pile. Makes it easier to pick up. Feed bill drops drastically during the few weeks they are chewing the pile down. Bugs, microfauna, worms and such.

They have to stop eating my cucumbers though. And tomatoes, lettuce, radishes...

I like the poop and the eggs. I keep the birds out of the garden though. They get greens still that we throw to them - mostly weeds and cuttings. The problem is having enough greens for the 8 chickens, 14 quail, 4 turkeys and 3 ducks. They'll enjoy plenty when we harvest our small pea and greenbean patches soon.

Well, looks like I'm getting out of the quail business for a while due to health problems. I may need some of you to help me get started in the future. I haven't been on much lately even though I have been watching when I could. Got some bad news last week and am looking at surgery soon. Trying to get as much done as I can before. Please remember me in your prayers.

God bless you all.
