I probably should. There are lots of yuppie/foodie types in the wine country that there has to be a market for them. In the meantime, I'll look up the permits and stuff that I would need. I don't have huge amounts of space, though, so I'm limited on how much I can supply.

Double check the rules for your area. Sometimes, in some states, you can get away with selling them from your house with no license or permit.
But in order to sell them for resale, to say a restaurant or store, you need certain permits that you don't need if you just sell them from your house.
It's confusing... Read the fine print on everything.

I saw the egg handler's license. $75 for the first year, $50/year after that. I don't think that's worth it for me. It looks like the meat requirements were less, but I still need to research that.

Edit: The egg license is required even if you sell 1 egg, even from home.

I have been selling my quail eggs for $5/dozen, so I would have to sell 15 dozen to cover this first year permit.

Thank goodness we dont need an egg permit here Or an FDA certification to sell dressed birds up to 20,000 a yr.

Price for butchered quail. Myshire is advertising a 4 pack for $20. Boy, that seems cheap after all the love, sweat and tears that I've poured into these tiny turds. Assume 10 oz each butchered, that is $8/pound of FINE dining experience.

Each quail is 1 lb live weight. $5 per bird or $5 a pound. ($8.33 butchered/pound at 60% meat.)

How much are you selling live birds for? Sell him the live cost plus a modest processing fee. $7 processed doesn't sound too far off. $8 is better. $9 sounds good, too. Your time, equipment and knowledge has a cost.

How much does feed cost? I'd be interested to know cost to grow out. I'm not patient enough to keep my own records.

If we send all our quails to Nabiki to market and sell, we might get rich. Wonder how big the market is.

Oh and the littlest knows "fish" and "chickie" the boys know "peep peep peep" and "chickie"

Pretty sure thats what ima do. In the future that will allow a profit margin. This time it wont because i fed em twice as long as i should have but still i think theyll at least break even when its all said n done.

I dont really sell many for eating tho chciken egg competition on my (long) rd is steep and i jus pickle and plan to keep pickling what we dont eat. Chicken eggs that dont go in the incubator are sold or given to family.

I don't know if I updated you all earlier, but we are up to 26 live quail hatchlings. Another one pipped and should hatch soon. We have had 5 pass away in total. Theres still 6 more eggs we are waiting on. I will likely leave them until tomorrow evening since I will be gone at work during the day tomorrow and cannot convince myself to turn the incubator off tonight when an egg just pipped as bit ago.
