I've only had quail for a little over a year.
I have never heard this before.
What is it?

It's the female sound after she lays an egg. Check for eggs and if none, she WILL start soon.

Yep! Have you never heard the egg-whistle before?! It is so weird but cool. Not all of my females do it but enough do that I hear it ~once a day or so. Go out by their cage more just a few moments after sunset!

I haven't really had a noticable littler one until this batch...he, the tiny one, already got offed.

I think I would just let them grow out until butcher time unless they were mean, like mine was.
