➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

@007Sean
***Okay, so will I be able to keep all of my Bobs together (12), or will they need to be separated out into smaller groups? They're in a 2'X6' raised pen right now. There's never been any fighting so far, they're almost 6 weeks old.
I think I asked but can't remember...do you know how many boys there are?

Have any of you guys had any chicks hatch out blind? And if so did y'all let them carry on or immediately cull them out?
I think some let then live but they don't usually live long.
I'd cull it.

the choice for me depends on severity of defect and overall quaility of life. I managed to raise an albino chick with partial blindness to 5+ weeks and then butchered with planned batch. but others passed naturally much younger. I have also raised a crooked neck and a cross-beak to butcher size.

I'm not 100% sure yet, waiting on their adult facial feathers. I think 2 for sure, as their feathers on the face & head are darker.

It's one of my white ones, it's smaller since it has to search more & bump into the feed & water bowls.

I've got a bantam with cross-beak, she's a good broody hen & I haven't gotten an of her hatchlings with cross-beak yet.

I guess this is all just part of it. I gotta do what I gotta do, right?

I had a few that were partially blind, it seemed to be related to the recessive white coloration. One made it to butcher size and just grew slower than the others. The other two passed after a few weeks, they weren't good at finding the food although I didn't change the layout of the brooder. It's up to you, but might be easier to just cull at hatch so not wasting food.

Congratulations! :woot
I'm gonna get a game warden to come out and do mine, I have the inspection form ready.
yes definitely get that step completed asap!! technically in indiana supposed to do it within 5 days, but i was resistant and have been wrestling/worrying with it for way too long!!

I'm playing with my new Hovabator. Got it plugged in with separate thermometers and hygrometer inside to compare what it says vs. what they say. It has different sized reservoirs for the water, so I'm starting with one of the smaller ones to see where humidity settles at.

I don't have any eggs on order now, but I have one hen laying pretty regularly now, and a second one that has laid twice over the last couple of weeks. We'll see if I bid on or win any auctions this weekend.

Edit: I'm going to have to get or make a bigger brooder.
