I currently have 1 grow-out cage set up in the aviary.....but my long-term goal is to have several cages available to separate out breeding groups of colors I want to incubate and then cycle them back into the aviary. (And to have safe haven to move into during bad weather) Mixed hatches are cool, but higher risk for lethal genes, albinism etc.

You are right. I might have to do the same. Before the colour ones, my life was easy lol. I just kept 4 wild jumbo males with the female Golden Giants (except for phoenix who stole my heart).

What I usually do is tag them and because if I sit with mealworms they flock to me - I can catch the ones to breed from (I do this to make sure I do not breed from related birds). Takes time doing it this way tho

In summer a dog crate works well - I can set it up in the pen and they are still seen inside - so no problems trying to integrate them afterward. Easy to put up and take down.

Now that I have an incubator and not having to wait for a hen to turn broody - I can see myself wanting to hatch more. I am also learning loads from the people here about colour combo's and yes I sooo want to experiment - so like you may look to have cages as breeders

How many eggs you have space to incubate now?? The Golden batch may end up being best deal of the Day especially with combining shipping

i have about a dozen males atm.....it’s time to remove some.....not fighting but it gets pretty noisy and my girls start needing stocking caps .....i have 1 male pheasant to 3 females and still don’t know genders on the 5 chukars.

The only one making noise at my house is the first one I caged by himself. The broken eye one.

The big giant dark boy shut up as soon as I out him in with the girls. He hasn't made a sound.

I got some sleep. Mandatory evacuation areas are within 20 miles of me now. My car is packed. I have two bags with stuff I still need in the house, but everything else is in the car. Hopefully I won't be heading out, but who knows?

Edit: I've been up since a little after 3, though.

I can handle all kinds of cold, freezing, & snow until the wind starts to blow then I'm done. The wind seems to make it 100 times colder to me. I'm back in Oklahoma after 10 years in Florida, we'll see how this 1st winter back goes.

I wonder if you are any where near @NanaKat.
