Exactly. I'm no concert pianist, I don't have that kind of time and it's not my life goal. But I have fun at it, and I can play most pieces that I want to. (Except the fantaisie-impromptu... I've tried, but Chopin must have been on crack when he wrote it.)
Practice is certainly important. There are a huge number of amazing musicians out there who will never be stars because to become a star, it's about who you know and luck.

I know some about it because I used to play classical piano competitions. I always took 1st or 2nd place, but I really don't care for the competition world. I haven't played in many, many years.

Agreed. That's pretty neat.

No amount of practice can turn those of us that are tone deaf into musicians.

The part of music that bores me is that they play the same songs the same way each day. Part of the attraction of live performances (without crowds, please), is the originality or spontaneity of the performance. If you want "true to the original (recording)", then listen to the recording on the format of your choice.

Street jazz. There is no score. Flow.

Lots of things are practice. Music & golf for examples. Repetition is boring. Batty says she must complete a project. I'll get 70-90% through and I'm done. Close enough for government work. The fun part is the design. I could complete it, but why? I figured out golf. Bored me. Hit the little white ball the exact same way holding the stick the same way ad nauseum. The ball doesn't move like baseball. Hit the aspirin.

That’s a good point but that’s what I like about going to smaller concerts. It’s fun and entertaining and you never know what’s going to happen!! And you can’t get the banter and stage antics and fun from a recording haha

Jazz is fun though!!

And golf is like watching paint dry lol even more boring than baseball and tennis!!

I can't imagine that anyone that really enjoys listening to music is completely tone deaf, though perhaps I am misunderstanding the definition.
I know a guy who thinks he's quite the musician. He loves music. He can't tell when his guitar is out of tune or he's singing off key. It hurts to listen to him.

:lau never heard that one.

And maybe I could play for fun haha

I don’t even know where most of my songs went anymore. I have to find them. Although tbh they’re probably more like journals or novels than songs :lau

I did have one pretty good idea a couple years ago but now it’s not really applicable. :lau

But I think I could still use it and just add it to a verse or something.

WAIT!

I just came up with two more lines and I think they’re brilliant! Thought of the perfect rhymes haha just had to write that down in my notes folder :lau

Jazz is just wrong notes with style. :lau
Live orchestras are just on a whole different level from the recordings. There's something nice about listening to a live piece you know well. You can kind of dig into it a bit more. I find that the first time I hear a piece I have a hard time understanding it as a whole, but as I hear it again and again, the themes and the variations start to be clearer to me. Individual playing style is also important. Even the simplest piece (Fur Elise, for example) can sound breathtaking when done by somebody that's truly good at playing. I get your point, though.

I love live music much better usually. If they’re good live. If not it just sucks. But live has so much energy and is just different.

Yeah it sucks. :(

I know so many who work their asses off and never make it big or even if they do “make it”, it’s still like club levels, making barely anything. Even if they play overseas.

And wait they have piano competitions!?

Agreed. That's pretty neat.

X2

Exactly lol although thankfully I’m not tone deaf I don’t think but I’ve just got zero rhythm and timing.

Oh trust me it’s possible LOL

I know a couple like that too. Kinda feel bad for them.

Ouch! In that case, I stand corrected.

Yeah, it’s awful lol

Quite the accomplishment. :clap To play is a lot of work. To win, impressive. Good for you.

Yes, some of the best musicians don't even have bands. They play for their own enjoyment. A high school band gets together every year, and has for the last 30 or so, to play a charity event. The lead singer is a professional Opera singer. The guitarist is the banker, lawyer for a drummer and other professionals. They are that good. Enjoy seeing each other for "practice".

I've been accused of that. Something like can't carry a tune in a 5 gallon bucket. Don't believe them. I love to hear myself sing. Crazy Lady hates it because she thinks songs should only have one set of lyrics. Meh. :p And tune, and pitch and all that other stuff. Chaotic cacophony.
