Quail getting into position to break out of the egg
And does the number of hens to roo determine the sex of the egg? Like if there are not enough hens will the hens lay more hens. Like chickens ( think they do that).
That does not work in chickens either. The male (ZZ) does not determine the sex in birds, the female(ZW) determines the sex.

:hit:hugs
I've been so busy I haven't been able to catch up yet.
I have bad news.
My Halloween twins...
One beat up the other Halloween night.
I thought I separated them but some how the injuries dummy made his way back to get beat up more.

I fixed that but I can not get him to eat for anything.
I'm guessing his injuried bloody beak isn't allowing him to eat.

I've pretty much kept him alive with drops of Nutri-Drench water but I don't think I'm going to continue to nurse him.

Now the really bad news.

I don't think I can raise a single baby so I'm considering offing them both.

I was going to do it tonight but I can't make my mind up.

I won't let the little one suffer much longer...if he doesn't eat on his own tonight I well help him tomorrow morning.

:barnieWhy did y'all let me order so many eggs!?!?
:thI'm gonna hafta build 4 more identical pens or add on different levels on the ones that I've already made!!!

I've never had one super mean just after hatch but I did have that little red one try to drag my tiny Tibetan hatchling all over the Incubator by his toes, I think s/he thought they were worms or something. S/he still does that to everyone!

I want several, but I want a couple just to have, the rest to eat.:drool

Splendid idea!!!:yesss:
the numbers are for adults....there can be more per cage as they are growing out. and assuming a 50% hatch on 90 eggs you are only 9 over. then assume 50% males that will have to go by 8 weeks. if you are considering another level of cages 2x9, i would recommend one as brooder/grow-out....look at it as a learning experience and basically you just took the fast route to quail self-sufficiency!!
I otoh know better!! my homegrowns have always been 75+% fertile with 80+% hatch so setting 80 eggs was ridiculously stupid!! But we will have plenty in the freezer this winter!!

i am having my chukar eggs for breakfast this morning and checking fertility (99% sure they will not be fertile as they are early eggs outside of season and i’ve seen zero mating behaviors) BUT if by chance they are, I would love to set some for Thanksgiving hatch!!

Chuckers and other partridge's have a pretty low fertility rate, as a general rule. My Corsican Red Legged partridges had about a 25% fertility rate! :(

speaking of winter and too many quail.....we are planning to process (probably 20 or so today) should I take video??
Sure, would enjoy the calamity! j/k

i still can’t tell difference between male and female....I’m kinda scared now that I only have 1 female!! DH has agreed to let me incubate more next spring because if only 1 female, i will have to remove 3 males :th
