➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Don't you have to wear it in MA. NH is the only state I've been in that doesn't require it and most accidents are fatal 😑 Same as wear a helmet on a motorcycle, NH doesn't require it. I'm glad I moved out of that state. You literally Live Free and Die when you live there...
Yeah you do and I usually always put it on as soon as I get in or at least at the end of the driveway (long driveway ha), I’m good like that, but sometimes I wait till I’m leaving the neighborhood but it gets really annoying so I usually put it on well before that. :lau if you go under a certain number of MPH it doesn’t beep.

And yeah I don’t get that no helmet thing!! So stupid to me!! People ride on the highways without them and I’m like

Motorcycles are dangerous enough with a helmet.
Sest belts didn't become standard equipment until legislation was passed in 1972. And back then they were only lap seat belts.
Oh wow!! Glad they passed then haha although you can still get hurt with one.

You get hurt a lot less with one than without. Flying through a windshield is never fun or being tossed around inside a vehicle like a ragdoll.

The reason I asked is because I have never had a melanistic hen set. They also have a higher percentage rate of peritonitis after the first breeding season.
My Chinese ring necked's and a couple of my Zarundi hens have been the only ones I've had set, hatch and brood. As I've mentioned before, I've only had ~10 hens do this in 50+ years of having raised them. Some would set for about half way through, then leave the clutch. Some would actually set until hatch, then abandon the chicks. Only 1 has ever set, hatched and then brooded her clutch.

You'll know if she is setting if she doesn't get off the nest when your in the pen...they will actually 'fluff up' just like chicken hens do on a clutch.

The blood ring in that egg is most likely due to bacteria getting in that egg. You'll see blood rings in shipped eggs but that's from shipping damage. If there from your birds than it's bacteria or the germinal disc didn't form correctly in the first few hours of development. I had 1 the other day, broke it open only to find bacteria had gotten into the egg.
i marked it with an x but left it in place.....i will try to post a candling picture today for your opinion.....i need to candle again anyway......our power went out a couple days ago......it was off for less than 2 hours so i doubt it was a problem. My hen is making a nest but definitely not staying in it......my plan is to brood any resulting chicks and introduce them same way I’ve been introducing new quail with hopes that the adults will accept them. I can still change the netting over the “bunny barn” if I have to separate anyone.

Wait what are boon worms? 😂 but that sounds amazing!! I always way overfed when I fed scratch 😂🤣🙈 then I stopped but maybe a much smaller amount would be okay. Although I don’t think I even have any anymore anyway. I do try to let them free range most days now though.
booneworms are just shorter, fatter mealworms i will try to get a picture of the bag......when I had chickens, they also loved greek yogurt treats......when i was having trouble with my turkey poults eating last fall, we mixed “cereal” for them 2x day with feed, greek yogurt, and scratch.

The adults will kill them if they are very young, especially the males will attack them....but you can try...the only way I have been able to introduce new birds to any of my adult birds is to move them to a pen that is 'new' to all the birds and make the transfer during the night. That's been my experince, yours may differ?

What's a dotted white?

Funny thing is I don't think the last 2 were even colors I ordered 😂
you may find it interesting to watch myshire colors and genetics videos on youtube. The colors don’t “hatch true” so with most hatches, you will get a certain percentage of “base colors” the dotted white is a recessive white or english white with a single dot of color on its head (usually brown). It is also the coloration of a texas a&m quail. if it has a dot and coloring on the back not extending down the wings, then it’s a panda......if the color covers the back and wings with yellow breast then tuxedo, and if just a small band of white on breast then it’s bibbed. none of these are feather-sexable

What they try to keep really quiet is that while seat belts can save lives, the rate of paraplegic and quadriplegic results is much greater among seat belt wearers than among non seat belt wearers. Personally, I would much rather die than end up as either a paraplegic or quadriplegic.

my new “routine” is to keep in the brooder until 3-4 weeks depending on breed and weather and then move them in with the buttons for 1-2 weeks. That gives a look/no touch situation prior to integration. It has worked with the quail and ducks so far. I’ve determined that Gimpy is not the typical male pheasant as he is the one that has escaped multiple times and returned every time. the last 2x he never left the yard. now he has basically become “guardian” of the flock. i’ve been a bit surprised that even though I only have the 1 hen, she is not “overbred” and i haven’t witnessed him “molesting” the quail or ducks since he’s matured.

@Kiki finally doing some quail! I'm in the middle of an aviary build but hopefully will be done right as they start laying eggs went in last night, I only have 12 so let's hope I have a good hatch! 🙏
