You can try the drinking glass. Part of the appeal of using a cup/glass is that the baby must push up with its feet in order to see its mates. I have lined the cup with a paper towel and had it work.

If you want to try the hobbles, I like scotch tape for the little ones. (I've never done quail.) I split the tape to half its width and use it that way. Have several pieces ready in case you spoil one or more, and try to get a helper to hand you tape, etc. Observe the healthy quail's stance and give your patient that much spread between its legs. I've had either method work well, but do it promptly. The longer you wait, the less your chances become.

Thank you!! This is very helpful!!! I’ve had it in the cup I think about half an hour so far and he was trying really hard at first but now seems to be resting but I don’t have it in the brooder with them, just next to me. The brooder is a good idea!! Maybe it will be more motivated if it can see it’s friends!! I’ll try that!!

And tape is a great idea!! This vet wrap stuff is such a pain to work with!! Or maybe it’s just me :lau

I was worried about putting the legs too close together or whatever too which is another reason I decided to try the cup. That and it’s fast and easy and like you said, they have to do the work themselves and strengthen them. I’m hoping this works. It’s a feisty little chick!!

I'm definitely no pro...but I'd also watch out for how it's feet rest in the paper towel. I'd be worried about creating a curled toe problem while solving the splayed leg problem.

I had to brace (staw and rubber band) a chick from my last batch and it did the trick. Although it was obviously awkward for the chick so it mostly just did squats and never walked. Fortunately, after about 5 hours I was able to take it off and the chick walked straight after that... probably out of fear of having to go in a brace again.

When using the straw brace, I was worried about the straw cutting it's legs so I cut the straw a little long and took a lighter to both ends. The flame curled the edges back in a smooth ring at the end of the straw.

All that said, I'd try vet wrap from here on out just cause I think the shock would get around a lot better than with the Forrest Gump braces...

I only use vet wrap for goslings, and then just the thinner (3/4"?) rolls. I find it too hard to work with for anything smaller, and so awkward to split it to a thinner width.

Good point! It wasn’t like that for long, just trying to climb up the sides when I took the pic aha although I think it’s toes are a bit curled too :( even before I put it in there.

And good idea!! Thanks!! I’m just so worried about hurting the little chick so hopefully the cup will work. :fl

Yeah that was my problem with it!! I was having a really hard time cutting it thin enough. And the rolls I have are really wide.

I bet it'll work itself out here pretty quick once it gets used to having it's ankles under it. The toes look like the really wanna be straight in the other pics but the chick just couldn't get it's weight on them to help hold em straight yet.
