r egg?

Thanks! I needed something bigger than the plastic totes I was using before. I'm hoping with the vinyl tablecloth below the shavings, that I can keep the bottom wood in great shape for a long while.
I've used offcuts of rolled vinyl flooring with puppy litters and they can really make a lot of liquid mess. They've held up great! Your idea should help protect it and make it easy to change out as needed between hatchings. Looks great!

I've got development in my Pearl eggs, woo! The cock is doing his job :) I didn't actually have a Pearl cock, but I did have a Falb Fee cock, so I'm using him. The result will be Pearls that are heterozygous for fawn.

Nothing in the first Celadon egg I set, but I expected that. I'm about to set four more, and also some more Pearl eggs and some Lavender eggs, as well as the first cross eggs for my Le Creme project.

I had one like that last weekend, woke up to a dead chick, 1 day old, looked like it went to sleep under the heat plate with the others and never woke up, no injuries or anything, guess something was wrong inside.
I had my two largest die on day four. Looks like they got stuck under the brooder plate and didn't move out in time. Not sure I'm in love with the brooder plate idea, but the rest of the birds have adjusted to it well.

My surprise yellow babies. Three have survived and the white feathers are starting to come in on this one. This one is also particularly friendly. Hoping it's female šŸ™

Plates aren't good for quail.
Lamps are better.

I read a lot of posts and articles and blogs to try to decide what heat source to use. I've got two set up. One is a heating pad over hardware cloth covered with a blanket, where they all go at night. During daylight they choose the brooder plate but they have to stand up a lot and there is no temp control and the plate gets really hot!

I think I'll try to find a way to make a ceramic bulb work out next time. I need lights off as they are right beside the adults and my roo is loud about his displeasure when the lights are on too long šŸ˜‚

This was our first hatch and we are learning with trial and error. I use natural deep ground cover, inside the house, so we have unique challenges with temperature and what I can do with placing my heat sources.

I'm thinking next time to get some plywood planks to build temporary walls to help hold in the heat better and find a way to get a couple ceramic bulbs at a good height. I've heard the ceramic doesn't radiate as well.
