➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

To be honest, I think it's this one, but it was put together wrong at TSC. I have an old couch cover topping the part that doesn't have a cover.

That means I have it put together wrong too, but it has more space like this. I can take it apart and put it together right another time.

It was probably meant to be a partially covered run for chickens…..so most likely assembled correctly. May just need to find a new tarp to completely cover it or continue using you’re quick fix as long as it lasts!!!! (Could even consider aviary netting over the entire top with tarp on top for partial shade)

Babies.
One accidental girl the rest boys And I still have more boy babies to butcher.
The weights are before I remove the guts and after I removed the guts and spine.

Question! I bought a giant new bag of feed and it’s CRAWLING with grain weevils. Is this going to be an issue if I feed my quail with bugs in it? Do weevils carry any bird diseases? I plan to go back and ask for a fresh bag tomorrow,..but it’s 50 lbs of feed 😩 I hate throwing it out but I don’t want weevils everywhere in my house either! And I’m still feeding babies indoors :-(

Welcome to my world.

If I tried to feed the birds feed without grain mites, I think they'd starve from a lack of suppliers. If it's really bad, you can probably ask the feed store for either a replacement or discount. Honestly, I think many of the bags ship already infested.

Yeah I probably wouldn’t care quite as much, if I wasn’t keeping feed inside for the baby quail…but ewwwww. I’ve bought feed from them since April and this is my first time with bugs! I hope it’s not a new thing for them 😩😩 I feel better knowing you haven’t had too many issues with feeding them the bug feed!

Steel garbage can for storage. They may already be in the feed, but at least they won't get out as much.

I think if you are able to put it in the freezer, it kills them. (If you can’t get fresh bag) Luckily I haven’t noticed if I’ve gotten any.

Freezer if you have room. I've read where you can smother them by carefully putting a lit candle (think tea light or whatever you have) in an air tight container and smothering them by burning all the oxygen out of the garbage can. Leave it closed for as long as possible - at least a day. If not, then try again longer.

I buy feed from a local guy that has good turn over. He rotates his stock and the delivery truck gets there every Tuesday, when I buy feed. If I'm lucky, I get it straight off the truck from a local feed mill. Only had bugs in one bag.

Be careful, the bugs will eat the nutrition and the birds may not get enough. If you have a lot of birds, the bag won't last long. If you only have a couple, return the bag or use it for kitty litter, after killing the bugs.

I had the same issue recently. I mixed some DE into the feed outside to try to kill them, then I took a gallon bag full, and put it in the freezer for 24 hours to have for the chicks inside, I was worried about having the bugs inside as well. I haven’t seen any moving bugs in the feed since. Normally I mix DE into my feed as I move it from the bag to the bucket I store it in outside, I’ve never had bugs before. I threw out my back a week and a half ago, and just had hubby dump the bag into the bucket, I thought it would be fine, just one time. Well the heat accelerates the bugs, and it was crawling with them in 2 days. Normally I use a big pickle container as a scoop, it’s maybe half gallon sized, if you’ve ever gotten fresh made pickles, you know the type of container I mean. I put a dusting of DE on the bottom of the bucket, then I mix one teaspoon scoop of DE into 3 containers worth at a time as I fill the bucket. I’ve never had issues with the birds or feed supply when I do this, first time I didn’t, bam, infested.
