➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

My babies just turned 5 weeks! They can’t go outside until I can sex them and know which pens they will fit in best…I’m reallllly done cleaning massive amounts of quail poop every other day! The Pearl Fee is a boy yea? And the two Italians? In the second picture…

My coop must have reminded you of quail poop. I thought about that after I looked at the pictures. I should have scraped the "garden gold" off first.

Well….front rosetta may be a girl but the pearl, and italian def boy and 75+% the dark one in back is too
I’m so glad you think so! That is the pen of “I think they’re boys” so they might as well hang out together! I needed to split them up somehow since they were getting too big to be crammed all in the one brooder. :) Thank you!

Hahaha nah! No judgment—they are seriously poop machines! But I did wait until I had JUST cleaned their pens before sharing pics and they still managed to put a ton of shavings in the waterer 🤣 😂

For quail housing, I made the "mistake" of buying a set of three battery cages, thinking they'd be good for short-term housing. (seemed reasonable, here the link: 3 quail cages) They were way too short, even for the quail they're designed for. I've since turned two of them into functional housing with good quail real estate.

I removed the original top, flipped the bottom to the top, then cut a ceiling access hatch strong enough to support forty or so pounds. The mixing tub secured to the open bottom creates a deep sawdust/leaf pool for the birds. With the access hatch, I can reach in to get eggs or clean. This one is attached to the coop with the slide-in dividers so if I need to do a deep clean I can confine them to the roofed side. The walking planks are waterproof vinyl flooring, which I find easier to work with and durable.

Most importantly, the birds like it.

Very nice upcycling! I bought some of those tubs a few weeks ago and made a cage for my albinos, I gave them a wire bottom since they are visually challenged and lay and walk in poop, but then I gave them a box of chips, so they might as well be on the floor in the tub anyway haha. I’m gonna make some small breeder cages with the other tubs. I took this the day before half of them went to the auction, I only keep 4 in it regularly. I estimate it cost me only about $40 or so, but really I already had most of the materials besides the tub, anyway, so it was $15.

For people who have wanted something like I have for my quail, I found something with the same kind of construction, but a bit bigger and tall enough to walk into.

They don’t have it anywhere near me, and to have it shipped to home or store is $60, but while I was investigating how to get it, I found they have a new producers pride metal brooder, that isn’t available online, it looks pretty nice, and would probably be a good grow out on the deck in winter.
