āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

I've had eggs not necessarily explode but open up because of the bacteria that got inside the egg, forced a fissure to open...a leaking, stinky mess. No cracks were noticed during candling. I candle all my eggs before I set them, checking for cracks, detached aircells, etc.

Well, I pulled these two tonight, looks like they're leaking some yolk and I don't see much/any vein development. They don't smell, but they're obviously leaking. There was one more I was unsure of, I thought I saw tiny little air bubbles floating around in it, but I also realized my candler's brightness goes up and down for some reason, I need to buy a new one STAT

I cracked open the two leakers, just to satisfy my own curiosity (and for my own educational purposes) and there wasn't any development whatsoever. So, infertile! I feel better about pulling them. I'll double-check the one with the weird bubbles tomorrow and toss it if it looks the same.

Tiny bubbles is an indication the egg has been 'scrambled', happens pretty often with shipped eggs. Also, do they float all around inside the egg when turning the egg while candling, that's a sign of a detached membrane.

Discarded 3 more eggs last night, 2 celadon and 1 black :( 2 had a detached membrane (air cell was moving around as I handled the egg) and 1 had a nonexistent air cell (teeny tiny bubbles, no discernible true air cell). These ones probably should have been caught & discarded before setting, but I'm discarding with extreme discretion since I'm not 100% confident in my candling skills yet. I cracked open all 3, no signs of any development (day 7) so I feel good about it.

Of the remaining 21 eggs, 12 had obvious signs of life. The other 9 had either very thick/pigmented shells and were difficult to candle, or had suspicious "shadows" but no obvious blood vessels/movement. But, no cracks/leaking/wandering air/odor either, so I left them for now :fl

Today is day 8, and my husband has been out of town since I set them on 5/31, I'm so excited to candle with him tonight and show him our babies! :celebrate
