➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

EBC972CF-9D38-4FA0-991C-98FE2769A9EF.jpeg another crazy afternoon....11 quail have hatched so far...2 more zipping, a few more pips but I had to open quickly as 1 little dummies found a wrinkle in my grippy pad and crawled under it!! Took the chick out and noisiest little one I’ve ever had!! had to give him to hubby to cuddle for a bit because even 2 stuffed chickens weren’t enough to calm him!! 2nd chick egg is zipping now. But bad news of the day is that I found one of my silkies dead in the run this afternoon.....the only 2 causes I can come up with is either the cockerels killed her trying to mate or she was possibly eggbound. but perfectly healthy this morning when I left.

Were these from your eggs or shipped? It would be interesting to see if they don't have as many feathers as the others when they get older, maybe you found a featherless gene? More heat tolerant quail?

Is she the first of her siblings/batch to lay?

I glanced in the incubator while cooking dinner, made note of where the puffball was hanging out this time, and turned back to the stove... and then realized that I had seen TWO heads on it. WHAT??
Oh. There are two babies now. :p

They seem to be absolutely determined that I won’t get to watch any of them hatch. I’ve gotta stop hovering!:he
No she is the second of her siblings to start laying.

Good to hear. My 11 week olds are not laying still. I'm wondering if they are defective??? Might be the gnats.

Is anyone else having an issue with biting gnats (no-see-ums) with great big fangs around the quail? I've tried several options, but haven't broken the pest cycle. No idea where these are coming from, but they leave the chickens alone. Sticky fly strips work until the wind wraps them around the cage.
