➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Also need suggestions for what to grow in quail grazing boxes. Will probably put leftovers of a cover crop mix in one, strawberries in another, herbs in another, and maybe some triticale in the last one. They will probably be getting pumpkin/melon/cucamelon if I can get them to grow somewhere in my yard too. Oh and I'm trying corn and sunflowers, not in grazing boxes, this year as well....

What do you guys think?
Are you going to be buying a complete feed for them or are you trying to grow things for them to live off of?

we decided to put our small raised garden in the aviary....planted 5 tomato, 2 habanero, 2 jalapeño, 2 bell pepper plants, some squash and green onion seeds. We didn’t think the quail would really hurt anything but my female that claimed it as a dust bath almost stripped the habanero plant in the first day! so we hung a net “curtain around it. last night a couple of the little dummies flew into a small gap at the top and did more damage to both habaneros and 1 tomato!! needless to say I was late to the office this morning so hubby could fix the curtain and try to save his pepper plants!!:gig

Be prepared for explosive and I mean explosive diarrhea if he eats any grains, beef, or pork. And he has to have 3-4 small meals a day.:lau He’s our high maintenance pup, but it’s not his fault. We love him anyway.
I love the silhouette of a dog on him! That is as cool as he is!

wow!! these babies are almost as stressful as baby quail!! I already had 2 escapees (chasing bugs). and a couple are already super aggressive! I added cardboard to the sides and going to change to the red bulb and hope that buys me some time to shuffle everyone around and separate out the bigger more aggressive birds! I may even slip them under the broody hens tomorrow??? oh yeah.....third silkie went broody today in the other coop!!:barnie

Yes they will have a very balanced 25% protein feed plus all the snacks

I'm going to order a bunch of poultry pasture seed from these people! But beats me if I can figure out exactly what zone we're in. We live in a weird place. I don't really disagree with the 'desert' designation, at least for all the way up here, but I'm going to email them to be sure. And I'm even less sure what you'd be, you're in such a weird transitional zone.

That alarm is probably fine on quiet but on loud it might startle them. I would consider it perimeter defense maybe instead of right by the actual aviary.

Yeahhhh I might make a type of net structure to put over my 10x3ft raised beds for the quail to have field trip days, wont get to it this year probably. My tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, and everything else are mainly for me. But the graze boxes will be inside the aviary specifically growing things for them.

I got "intermountain" which looks like prairie stuff?

The perimeter might work...maybe. You'll have to stop by once the structure is up and help me brainstorm
