āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

Hey Quailers,

Just a question.. for those raising quails for breeding/eggs/meat etc..

How do you keep from inbreeding? Are you buying quails/eggs from a new source each spring to mix up the gene pool?

That's what I'm going to do, either in Spring or Fall next year. I'm considering dividing the garden and keeping 2 coveys and alternating the gene pool changes between them.

I'm an addict who almost certainly will be adding more lines down the road indefinitely, which helps, but my initial batch is from five different sources, three in state and two out of. I have enough diversity that I can actually follow a linebreeding formula pretty indefinitely to keep the inbreeding coefficient down without too much trouble (livestock software can be really helpful in taking the manual math out of this). Keep track of who is who is the hard part. Can't wait for my leg bands to arrive, the quail do not enjoy being sharpie-d.

What kind of leg bands did you get? I bought some but they keep falling off, so bought jiffy wing bands and then couldn't get those to work right.

Blank shooter.
