➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

@HuffleClaw how many eggs are you getting? How exciting for you, it'll be a great winter project!

I raise my quail in the garden on the ground. They have bins and old plant pots I cut the bottoms off for hidey holes and cover and plants in there too.
I was originally planning on 15, but I’m going to go with about 10-ish eggs.

Also thank you for the info! :)

How about these? (Just for a brooder)

You're going to post pics when they hatch right? I'm still waiting for eggs and it's probably going to be months yet :barnie

Those boxes as a brooder will be too small in short order. You'll need something bigger or a couple of those.

Ok.. time for a really dumb noob question..

With my baby cortunix quails, there are 3 distinct colors appearing.

Brown striped
All Yellow
Light Speckled

Does this mean the birds are unrelated? Or do siblings throw different colorings? (I assumed that you'd have to mix up the gene pool to get different colors)

:idunno:idunno:idunno:confused::confused::confused:

Thanks y'all!
Depends on the parents, and grandparents. If they have different colors, then the chicks could be different colors depending on which color genetics they received. Some colors are dominant, some are semi-dominant, and some are recessive.

I have a similar set up for my brooders, but depending on number of birds can get gross really fast. Usually works well for the first week then need to move to wire cages because they poop everywhere.

Thanks Sara!

I was looking at these little chicks thinking 'surely they can't be full blood siblings if they are different colourings'..
Unfortunately they could be. Some colors *may* also be sex linked. I'm trying to get a red traditional, which has the feather pattern of the traditional pharoah but with red instead of brown. I have a male traditional over a red hen, and the ones that turn out the color I want so far have all been hens. The other colors that resulted (solid brown or traditional) have been a mix of boys and girls.
