Maybe it's the way they manufacture the wafers now days but I have an old 1967 Still Air Brower incubator, don't use it anymore but it still works...I have never replaced the wafers nor had a failure.I haven't had a digital controller fail but I am sure they can and do fail. I am also sure they do not fail as frequently as the wafers do. Even the solid state part of the controller that works with the wafer can and does fail but it is rare compared to the wafer failures.
Always try to approach them from the side. They have an instinctive fear of anything approaching from above. These dummies just don't like me. They freak when I mess with them.

I have had the wafers fail anywhere from a couple of months to over ten years. The most common failure is a pinhole whether in the metal or the solder that causes the bellows to fail. I have not had the solid state controller that is part of the whole unit ever fail but I know of others who have had that part fail also.Maybe it's the way they manufacture the wafers now days but I have an old 1967 Still Air Brower incubator, don't use it anymore but it still works...I have never replaced the wafers nor had a failure.
I also have a DIY GQF knockoff, I have had to replace 1 wafer after 10 years of use. I built this cabinet in 1997. It got to the point the space between the contacts became too wide to regulate the temp correctly.
Just my experience, others may have different experiences.
I figured out it was the location. Plus my house is super dry for whatever reason. I'm constantly having to refill water bowls even when the dogs haven't been in that room.Old argument. Analog vs digital. Vacuum tubes vs solid state. They both get the job done, which one is cheaper? More reliable?
For me, I should have sprung for the whole control kit, not just the fan upgrade. Hmmm.
Run it to failure and then decide. I hope it fails during testing...
@Pugsabi just read your hatching thread, you said this one wasn't stable temperature wise. It has been very stable for me. Inside, away from doors, AC vents closed or blowing away. Does your new incubator swing also?
Yeah, I've had those problems also. Anything man-made can and will fail. You just have to get the best quality you can or can afford.I have had the wafers fail anywhere from a couple of months to over ten years. It is like that here too. I’m always refilling waters.I figured out it was the location. Plus my house is super dry for whatever reason. I'm constantly having to refill water bowls even when the dogs haven't been in that room.
