I have a question. Is the law limited to a certain age of bird? Some laws allow for chicks up to six months. Because of that, meat birds are allowed.
Unless, of course, there’s a law against butchering.

The law doesn't dictate age, but it does say that I am not able to raise chickens on residential zoned property for slaughter.

I think that law was written to protect against Commercial slaughter in a Residential setting?

It's in our local chicken ordinance. There's an ordinance specifically focused on chickens. Essentially we are allowed a small flock up to 8 hens, no roos, and they are to be kept as pets. There's something in there I recall that states slaughtering for your own consumption is included. I find it weird, because you could go hunt a deer in the woods and butcher it in your garage or shed but you cannot slaughter a chicken. Maybe if I take them out to some hunting grounds I could slaughter them there. Bureaucracy...

I have an excuse to join the party now, I have been commissioned for a young fancy colored laying/pet group in exchange for some rabbit meat for my carnivorous critters.

My hens are a little on the young side, but I wanted to do an in-house hatch within the next month or two before I let fertile eggs go anywhere anyways. Just going to have to be extra choosy in which eggs I set and assessing/culling the chicks.

Off to go sterilize the incubator!

You might be right, I might be crazy...

Yeah, but that wouldn't be the same...I have the need to learn and discover things on my own. Collecting honey from my own hives/bees is the culmination of the efforts and learning.

Weird, isn't it. Can't explain it to Crazy Lady. The best way to explain it is from Jimmy Stewart who said, "There are those who learn by being told. There are those who learn by watching. Then there are those of us who just have to pee on the electric fence ourselves."

What if you raise them for pets and change your mind? We aren't allowed "livestock". Pets are OK. We keep a mess of Asian Ground Parrots for the eggs. I've raised two batches of CX ground parrots. In summary, who enforces this and how friendly are you with the witnesses? I mean, neighbors.

I had a mathematics professor who proved that 1=5. Changed the rules to do it, but no one liked those rules and he did it. Therefore, mathematically, 8 = 40. I don't see a problem.

What you do in the privacy of your own home... Making supper is not illegal and I like fresh ingredients. Fresh is good, healthy and environmentally conscious. You do want to be good, healthy and environmentally conscious, don't you?

9 happy little quailies. Just moved them to the brooder. Will see how that works in this configuration.
#10 has commenced zipping. About 1/3 around. If it finished by 3, it would have taken 48 hours for all 10 to hatch. I don't see slow poke getting here in an hour. But, try me.

Needs to hurry up, I got housekeeping coming to clean the incubator for the next guests. I should contact the photographer and have pictures taken too...
