Yesterday I had two clean brooders. Today something smells awful! I “know” it’s the quail because they are more challenging. I’m trying to think of the best way to clean their brooder. These bullets intimidate me.

Yesterday I had two clean brooders. Today something smells awful! I “know” it’s the quail because they are more challenging. I’m trying to think of the best way to clean their brooder. These bullets intimidate me.

I really really like paper towels.
Lay down three layers in the morning.
Take up the top layer mid day.
Take up the next layer a few hours later.
Take up the last layer at night and start over.

Putting down a few layers at once makes cleaning easy.

i cover heating pad with a puppy pad. then I put a grippy layer and sometimes paper towels especially under food and water. I do a full change once per day. in shed brooder i have shavings covered by puppy pad at first and then just shavings once they are about 2+ weeks. (and i wash my grippy pads for re-use)

Casper is eating well now as long as there is food under his feet! He is the little guy in the middle (he's also the youngest by a full 12-18 hours).

@Kullas Is today candle day?

I got something going on there in the quail eggs kinda hard to see. I did candle the other eggs I got set and something going on in all 12 of those.

A week and a half with no response and I had given them up for dead but my trading partner just got back to me.

I hopefully wont have three dozen extra fancy quail I have no purpose for! Yay! A bunch of them came out too nice to eat. Now I can just keep my favorites (and Caspeerrrrrr...... He is doing great, though. Eating and drinking and running around whole brooder with siblings unafraid).

I must be prepared for them to disappear still...


P.S. My avatar bird has tacked on a full ~2oz of mass all in the breast and crest since that picture was taken, and if anything his color has gotten more dramatic. He is throwing the nicest chicks I have ever hatched. I am in love I want a million more.

I went from 14 males to 10 to 4 nicest in the breeding rotation. Space for two new ones from the up and coming batches. Unless my pearl turns out to be a boy both of those might end up being charcoal's sons.
