➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Oh Coturnix :hugs I find having to keep them separated exhausting too. Much easier when they can all just be together!

My 2 original hens are all hanging with the other possy in the big outdoor pen. My littles also go outside each day - I have an xxxl steel dog crate that I covered in aviary mesh (I did initially do soft netting, but lost a few from previous gang :hit)

It's the end of summer here in aus :hit:hit I HATE winter. Now I'm going to have to decide if I keep them all under extra light over winter, and then replenish stock in the spring? Oh I don't know, it's taken so long just to get to this point, and we still only have 2 bloodlines mingling together :hit:hit

Oh no! Get them outside while you can! We are in the opposite hemisphere so my poor birds have barely seen proper daylight in their short little lives. I am so excited when I can finally take them outside for (supervised) runs.

I had mine on lights indoors and took them off. They still lay, just at the actual frequency I might have a chance of eating the eggs now!

I have to process three more males tonight. They were kind of on the list already, and they are getting picked on in the community pen to a higher degree than acceptable :hitI feel bad.

Luckily, with them gone I can re-squish my last few birds from that group into pairs/trios in smaller bins (yay....more cages....>.>) to get the adult males 100% separated, which is my preference when I have space. That frees up the big crate for the new batch of fledglings! Lots of space to flip-flap around in there with no chance of harming themselves.

Where did @BReeder! go?
@RUNuts has not posted here in several days either.
 Did I make people go away again?
Hi! What do you wanna talk about? Some of us have to work for a living. Sometimes harder than others. :(
Good news is that I'm still employed and I'm going sleep good tonight.

By the way, 2 week old quail still in the brooder stink. Work for 14 hours and having issues doing chores. And it's been raining for another week. Should I keep complaining? I feel a little better.

I think those boys are working on building cages.
That's another thing...

Cage is mostly done except for the sides, front, doors and the roof. Looking pretty good too!

Still bummed about losing the dummies. Batch #2 is 11. :(

Well, I’m sorry I’m only lazy, worthless me.
I know they stink. I just cleaned the brooder again.
I’m sorry you are bummed and unhappy.

Uh ho.
How did you lose them? They escaped?

Ouch, what a week! Don't beat yourself up for the silly critters, I have also killed several in stupid ways this time. It is much easier to say that to you than do it myself though.

So, the three I am going to process next are a beautiful tibetan, roux dilute, and golden layer. I think I will save the feathers this time and take them to the local fly shop! If they're useful at all to them I'd love to trade for flies in the future. :love

No, these were the ones that crammed into the feeder and suffocated. Lost 5 right off and 2 later that day. So 19 to 11. Couldn't get them into the huddle box so brought then back inside and worked extra this week. Dummies.

I'll go clean the brooder and when I take the top off, here come the rockets. Hilarious. They will land and I'll scoop them up and back to the brooder.

Batch #1 is still 9. 5 weeks old.
Batch #2 is 11 and holding. 2 weeks old.

I'm bummed and tired. Mostly tired, but BYC is refreshing.
Thanks for missing me! It's good to be missed. Especially when you are playing on the freeway.

Did you hear about the guy who identifies as an elongated fish?
Diagnosed as mentally eel.
:lau

I totally missed this.
I had no idea.
I am sorry. :hugs
