➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

4 boys processed. 1 had large testes. Other 3 were definitely smaller. No pictures. My helper ran off. Out of 5 males, we had 2 that were noticeably larger. Wound up keeping the one with all the feathers on his back. Hoping he is not the bully. If so, his replacement is 2.5 weeks behind him. Observation, he has the enclosed section. All the other birds were in the open bay. This morning, he was in the enclosed section and all the girls were in the other end of the coop in the dust bath box. Will watch.

Brine is cooling off. Did not spatchcock, but skinned them whole. These things are tiny. I need a new scale since mine said over range on the carcasses. I did try. Pawn shop has a nice one I will research.

No eggs at 9.5 weeks with no supplemental light. Thinking we may need light next winter.

One surprise. Little one was missing a few more feathers than it looked.

Gizzards full of sand from dust bath. All organs looked healthy.
There was a digital Kitchen Aid scale on clearance yesterday at my Krogers. If it's still there today I will pick it up for you.

I may or may not be crazy, but I just drove 40 minutes each way to get a couple of babies to be companions for my lonely chick. :) One of them is yellow! The gentleman I picked them up from felt bad for making me take the different one, but I was thrilled :ya

They are only 3 days behind my one, but they are half the size! Here’s hoping they get along well.
Yellow!
Pics!

@Texas Kiki......the auctions are starting.....grab your fb bff!! better deals early!!
Thx. I just checked it out.

I'll keep an eye on it today to see how it works
The Current one is for Pearls and the price is already up to what the website sells them for.
Does anyone ever get lucky and get some for less?

pearls typically max out fast, but sometimes get lucky....i managed to get mine @ lucky 22. the ssc and rare color mixes are good choices as well as usually include pearl or snowy. sometimes he posts multiple batches of pearl in same day. basically if you are winning bid, you message him email (for paypal account) and zip code and he shoots back invoice with shipping. if you win multiple auctions or have a pending order, shipping can be combined. shipping costs are basically same as with website. savings on shipping cost is best on ebay orders as many pearl/rare color assortment are fixed price on ebay with free shipping.

Why won't my turkeys hatch!!? Do they take as long as ducks?? They've been pipped since last night, all of them were pipped as of this morning. So far only two tiny triangles of shell removed.
I tend to not watch the hatching too closely. If a turkey pips a big round hole and is still like that without any zipping after 24 hours, I get concerned about it being shrink wrapped.

Normally it does not take too long after zipping starts for them to hatch.

I woke up to find the lid off one of my incubators! Temp was down to 80° and the eggs were cold :hit
Went ahead and candled both bators and pulled all clears. Down to 44 eggs and no idea if the cold ones are done.
Had to be the damn cat.
i’ve had power outages and/or incubator unplugged, lid off etc. up to 6 hour duration with temps falling to high 60’s low 70’s. can result in delays between hatches, but no real difference in hatch rate. mine fell to 72 in 2 hours during last night power outage so only falling to 80 probably less time the lid was open. (room temp here is 68)

I only kept....three...much restraint...LOL :gig
