➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Exactly, you said it better than I could.

My husband's grandma thought it was disgusting to eat goat, so the next time we had her for dinner I made no mention of the meat source. I let her think it was beef roast. She happily ate seconds and complimented me on the delicious roast and when we told her it was goat she was floored. She changed her mind that day.
I made some Indian type lamb the other day.
I haven't been a fan but I am now.
It was really good.

I grew up in a rural, agricultural area so am no stranger to the concept of raising livestock though I’ve never done it myself. It is definitely a place where standard big scale farms are the norm (corn, soybeans, hog confinement lots, etc) and the older I get the more concerned I am with the welfare of the animals and the care of the land.

That said I am a huge wimp when it comes to processing animals or eating meat beyond the standard beef, chicken and pork. I have a lot of mental hang ups regarding “alternative” meat sources. Not necessarily based in logic just weirded out by it. I’ve gotten it in my head that I want to raise quail though so am trying to move past some of these issues.

My flash light just died.
It can't get dark soon enough so I can check for friends.
I really don't think he will have a friend though. But I am so excited to hear him tapping on the shell.

I might need a buddy or two for him. I am not listening to one cry all night.

He is for sure internally pipped because I hear him.
I can't believe this.
mine did well with the stuffed rooster. we put it in the aviary today and didn’t do well so in with the rabbit for a couple days of look no touch.

The video is taking for ever.
:barnie

I was trying to show the difference between gone and gone-ish then I decided to grab a movement and you can clearly see (I think) the beak wood pecking. Then I grabbed another and noticed an external. Oh my. :wee

Hurry up video. :barnie

Livestock... pets... it’s a POV thing. DH thinks my meaties are pets. I don’t know why he thinks this. He doesn’t pet them. He doesn’t feed and seldom looks at them. But he’s visibly distressed that I’ve been processing them the last two days. I couldn’t possibly ask him to help except peripherally. He’s such a tender-heart. (Coyotes don’t qualify as pets.) :hmm

But man! Processing chickens is HARD WORK. Who knew? Not me, that’s for sure. Fifteen in the fridge and freezer; six to go. I figured I’d have them all done first day. I’m getting faster, though.

It’s sad killing them. I didn’t think they’d take so long to die. (I’m bleeding them. My book says that’s best but I’m not sure whether it’s really that much better results-wise than cutting off the heads and having it done so far as the bird knows... maybe not enough that anyone but a foodie would notice?)

To me they’re livestock. They’re meat birds. I like them, but we have to eat, I like chicken and I hate CAFOs. It’s more honest, IMO (and more kind, too) than buying plastic-wrapped Tyson chickens at the grocery. That disguises the cost and enables bad behavior (treating animals as mere commodities). My birds have had a pleasant life and I value them. I’m not gonna stop eating meat. I don’t like killing them but if someone has to do it, then why should the someone not be me? (But I still ain’t eatin’ no pup-dog nor anything like. :p I’d be willing to try rattlesnake tho...)
