➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I really like your cardboad boxes when i first read of them i thought the cheapo aluminum pans would also work well if you run out. Does it last about a wk or do they kick it all out in 3 days?

Thats really nice and imalso a fan of all the repurposing you can do :highfive: idk what else you can do but i hope at least it seldom happens
My only problem with the cheap aluminum pans is the cost money. I can pick these boxes up at the grocery store and Sam's for free all day long.

I always have a stash on hand.

I haven't changed the twins dirt since I moved them out. It's at least three weeks old.

My adult quail...I usually add a cup of dirt every few days and change the box out every week.
They are messier and play in it a lot more than the babies.

Thats about what i expected :lau i have to add to my adults dust baths about every 3 days and if i dont gigive them one for a couple days i can count on needing to add to it The Next day :lau

Ok so ur asking for them not just saving what u buy, thats smart. i was thinkn i dont buy things in that kinda bulk :lau i have tons of diff things instead of cases of one thing but i dont have a sams or costco membership. And those pans are like a buck for 3 but wouldnt be disposable as readily as the free cardboard. My aunt swears by them as baby duck baths but i dont brood that many ducklings usually.

Yes, the adults will scatter it. The babies will walk on it. Slowly scratch, but not a lot.

The aluminum don't hold up as well. It gets wet and rusts through quickly especially the wet, acid droppings. I repurposed some from food hauling after the chickens cleaned them up. Not a fan, but they work.

The cardboard trays you ask for when they are stocking the shelves or empty them yourself. Stores more than happy to let you have them.

The hardest part about shipping crates is getting the nails and staples out. A lot of aggravation and sometimes easier to cut it off. Mixed results. Crazy Lady complained. Then I painted it. Cleaned up real nice! Like me. :lau

I had one of my four-ish week olds make a break for it the other day. I had the coop door open and bent down to scoop some food. I looked up in time to see him make a sight line out of the coop and then fly. I could almost hear him shouting “freedom!!”. Then he landed about 10 feet away and didn’t seem to know what else to do so I scooped him up and put him back.
I had one do this when I took some extra males to auction one time. It was a light body silver type, and the gal moving the birds from my cage to the auction cage had him just squirt out of her hands. He got a decent amount of height and headed out over the parking lot. She finished loading the rest of the birds and I put my cage back in my car.

I then walked in the direction he flew and found him just sitting on the road, pretty much stunned by what happened. He didn't even freak out when I picked him up. He had gone over about a football field distance and over 3 fences and a tree. Luckily he had landed in the bike lane or he probably would have been run over.

That is some impressive distance. Mine is a jumbo so probably not quite as svelte. :gig

They're heeeeere! @el dorado quail 's babies! 100 + 28 extras, 0 cracked as far as I can tell, and the best packaged eggs I have ever recieved.

El Cheapo the incubator is frustrating me in that even with it's extra insulation the top and bottom are different by a whole degree, but I think I've got them balanced perfectly across 100 F. :fl I will be upgrading the fans before next hatch I guess.

They go in at ~8pm tonight, spread across both bators. Hoping for a 40-50% hatch at least.

I got the coop finished. Still working on the pieces for the runs. The run is being built in two parts, so I have an adjustable sized enclosure, either 6'x4' or 6'x8' plus the 2'x6' coop. That should be plenty of space for the permanent 6 bird flock and any meat birds that need some time before going on to their great reward in the sky.
Awesome!
