So, roommate just texted me to tell me that one of my chicks died. No physical signs of injury. :-(

Edit: Roommate said the others were crowded around it and it was spread out. Can the other chicks have over heated it? I turned the heat lamp off this morning since the quail have been comfortable in the 75-85 degree temperatures in the house.

That sucks! :(

160 posts behind. :he

But I’m jumping in to ask a preservation sort of question. I want to just keep some individual feathers, maybe do some crafts with....(I’m thinking maybe candles).
Does a feather need anything done to it? Will it break down after time? Or should the quill tip be dipped in something, or the whole feather sprayed? I saw some stuff online, but would rather not randomly try stuff that won’t work. :D
Nothing special, keep dust off the feathers, dust = dust mites.
You can keep them in a cedar box or a box with moth balls to keep bugs from getting to them and eating them up.

Shoot.

Did you notice if this one was slightly smaller than the group?

It was smaller. I don't know why it didn't make it, but I've put in another water and food source just in case there was some competition. I don't think that was it, but it can't hurt to eliminate any possibilities.
