➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

quail can be hatched at same time as chickens, but you have to be ready for the hatch....ie space to brood separately if necessary, and permanent housing ready to go. i agree that first time hatch + winter is not a good time to try it......

Thanks!! That makes total sense!! I think I’m gonna set my brooder up maybe this week so it’s ready before the chickens hatch. I know it won’t be for like a month but I want to be prepared this time. I usually never am.

But yeah, I probably won’t do the quail now.

The “for when I actually do it” part was meaning when I actually get quail eventually, not buying some for this hatch, cause I thought Kiki was talking about the cages with her last post??

That’s the part I was asking about mostly. If the crate idea was a bad one cause I thought that’s what Kiki was saying and want to be prepared/clarify for when I do get them.

dog crates wrapped in hw cloth can work as grow-outs or temporary housing, but not necessarily best idea for permanent housing. they can be more challenging to clean etc. if planning to use cage, then you will probably want a built one with poop trays

Thanks! This makes sense. I think. The crates I think come with plastic trays but I’m guessing those aren’t really good?

I’m trying to figure out how I would clean cages too though cause the crates have large doors and multiple doors which seems like it would make it somewhat easy?

I think I’d rather just build cages though. I think it’d probably be cheaper too cause we already have tons of hardware cloth so would just need to buy some wood which isn’t that bad and would still probably end up being cheaper than buying crates haha

What I’d really love to do though is build an aviary cause I don’t really like the idea of having them in cages and never being able to touch the ground or scratch around but from what I understand that’s not really a good idea cause the males can’t be housed together?? Is that true even if I made a very large one and had plenty of girls???

What I might do to kind of compromise/get the best of both worlds is maybe make cages with a little run underneath them so they can get to scratch around/be on the ground but I can still separate them/have more quail? Would that work? Or would they not really use a ramp/the upper level?? Maybe just smaller ground cages/pens??

Still trying to figure it all out. Think I will figure this all out before ordering any. Unlike the chickens.

Thanks for your help.

My new pens that I've built are 2'x4', 2'x5', 2'x4', 2'x2.5' & 2'x2.5'. How many quail can this house? Ultimately it's two 2'x9' pens, one is divided into two pens & the other is divided into three.
One male per cage if you are planning on keeping them.
If growing them out more makes per cage will work for a little while.

adults are 1 sq ft per bird average....so 8, 10, 8, 5,5 with 1 male to 4 female ratio.....total 36 adult birds with (2) 2x9 pen depending on individual personalities of birds and also account for loss of floor space with hideaways, feeders, and waterers

The minimum that I've read is 1 square foot per bird, but I wouldn't house more than half that. I would put 1 roo and 3-4 hens per pen.

I've been so busy I haven't been able to catch up yet.
I have bad news.
My Halloween twins...
One beat up the other Halloween night.
I thought I separated them but some how the injuries dummy made his way back to get beat up more.

I fixed that but I can not get him to eat for anything.
I'm guessing his injuried bloody beak isn't allowing him to eat.

I've pretty much kept him alive with drops of Nutri-Drench water but I don't think I'm going to continue to nurse him.

Now the really bad news.

I don't think I can raise a single baby so I'm considering offing them both.

I was going to do it tonight but I can't make my mind up.

I won't let the little one suffer much longer...if he doesn't eat on his own tonight I well help him tomorrow morning.

Oh, that's too bad.:hit

They just hatched, didn't they? Isn't it rare to have chicks do that to each other? None of mine have, at least... :fl

Awww no!! :hit :hit I’m sorry Kiki!! :hugs

Hopefully the dummy will decide to eat soon. :fl

Can you clean his beak up a bit? Maybe that will help? But assuming you’ve already done that.

I’m sorry. :hit

I would think the one quail would probably be okay by himself until it’s time to eat him??
