How old are they?

The Pansy girls are a few months older, I think.
The Tibetan is younger but her sisters have been laying.
Well some have been laying a while and some just started last week.


I have to double-check the dates they hatched. Brb

i thought the tibetan had crowed??.....for future reference always check for foam at 10-12 weeks before offing the males!!!

No that was the big boy dark Rosetta one that crowed.


I'm still a weenie about checking them. I've been practicing checking on the ones that are freshly butchered before they are butchered but I can't check a live one yet.
I'm scared I'm going to hurt.

i will see if DH will take a video of me with some from the same batch....and maybe even my littles to help you!!! my little scarlet tux from that bunch is a perfect “foam model”

Do people process birds that drop dead? I don't with my chickens.

I wouldn't have considered it had I not been present when he died, I'm sure he hurt himself "flushing". During the redistribution of hens after he died I found that my prettiest silver had plucked the head of his pen mate. So he got escorted to freezer camp post haste.

With quail they sometimes do because the cause of death can often be due to a broken neck from flushing too hard into the top or sides of their cage.

His neck was like a wet noodle before he died, it took him a few seconds to pass. He was such a nice roo, would come to his pen door and jump up on my arm/hands, even let me pet & scratch him.

I had two do that from my first batch. The first one went full speed into the side of the coop and I'm pretty sure broke his neck. The second one I didn't see it happen, but I suspect something similar. I didn't process either of them.

They're crazy little birds.

I found three eggs in a cage with the two light Pansy females and my favorite Tibetan.

I've never wanted these babies to be all boys so bad.
I'm almost positive that 5 are girls and poor Cruch is the only boy but I don't want his babies.

Yes, this is a very important lesson that should be learned by all.

Aw! You could do it so easily. You just need to practice. I don't think it hurts them but they are happy when it's over. They squirm, but mainly I think that is from landscape timbers

Alas, no. At this point I don't expect to see her again. I did find the food dish, though. It was sitting on one of my lawn chairs. I really need to get a camera. Maybe I'll get myself one for my birthday.

we processed 1 yesterday....it was below freezing outside and it was still warm so must’ve just happened in minutes. DH processes them but if he finds something odd, we don’t keep the meat. in this case, the liver was “exploded” not sure of the cause of that as had never seen it before.....since we had just butchered at dark the night before, we are not sure if maybe he was unintentionally injured by flushing, or one of us or another bird??? it just happened to be one of the GP males that was given a “pass” which makes it even more frustrating!
