I noticed that the earlier chicks rampage thru the incubator and kick all the eggs around. Then some of the eggs pip in the middle, or eggs that pipped never finish because the chick gets shifted in the shell from the rolling. So I started lining my eggs up in channels of shelf liner to keep them from getting punted all over.

I just put these in lockdown yesterday, the eggs really only go side to side, and the little channels prevent tgat

My first hatch I had no shelf liner at all, and those eggs flew around and hit the sides hard! I had several that pipped in the middle and died in the shell. Since I started doing this, I rarely have any who pip in the wrong place.

Interesting. I've finally settled down about hatching after 2 years. It is exciting, isn't it?

I'm getting decent hatches letting them do their own thing and play soccer with the unhatched litter mates. They do push them to the edges. When you say pip in the middle, are you talking about the widest part around the egg?

I saw this in a previous post and did the same thing! I loved this idea. The chick still in the egg that's rolled over to cover the zip did so on his own. I took the single chick out and put it in the brooder hours ago.

Mine started hatching election night. Just put them in the brooder today. Would you believe, that as I was transferring them, one brave chick jumped out of the incubator, landed on it's feet, ran behind the dog cage (with dog in it). Little booger, that was a 3 foot jump. Was uninjured. Didn't even struggle when I picked it up, (after moving the dog and cage out of the way) and is having a blast in the brooder. LOL.

Last hatch, because there were so many and they tend to go flying out of the nr360 because there isn’t a high enough lip around the edge, my husband missed one, we were doing it together because I was afraid I couldn’t catch them all if I had runners lol. One leapt right out, then off the table, and luckily landed in a box of packing peanuts I had by the table because I had just received a package. Lucky guy, totally unharmed.

The afternoon of day 17, I have my first pip! I have 34 that went into lockdown, 8 clears and 2 blood rings (one was a double yolker, but at least it tried). I had a couple that were dark and I wasn’t sure of the status, so I left them.

Some of the big birds were molting, and I had different ages in the grow out, so I wasn’t sure who might be laying a first egg and who had been laying for 3 weeks. But I wanted to get some in the incubators to make sure they’re working properly. Stay tuned for the big brinsea, i think Wednesday is hatch day. I even put some fridge eggs in, because I had room in the behemoth.

im hoping for 30 from the nr360 and 75 from the brinsea, I didn’t even candle them, so it’ll be a surprise. I spot checked 2 or 3 from each tray and all were growing, it’ll be a surprise. Hopefully it’ll be chick-a-palooza here this week!

I'm surprised how long it's taking for twenty eggs to get to it. We had our first chick 33 hrs ago, they seem to be coming in batches of two at a time. Had one just hatch a minute ago. I can see at least three more with cracks and chicks making a go of things. So far nine hatched.

Sometimes the late ones are weak and need help, sometimes they’re fine. I would watch for signs they are slowing and getting weaker, like reverse contractions, they get slower and further apart.
