They tend to drop in fertility, I think. None of my hens are that old. I've heard that you should replace your roo every six months and your hens every year. I'm not replacing mine nearly that often since I'm not a commercial breeder.

Why so soon for the roos? I was thinking of keeping the studs for their full lifespans. I can't imagine that their lack of interest is ever an issue.

I've heard that they become less energetic and less interested in mating. The young boys will mount everything often.

Shh. . . no one told my older roos. They're still mounting everything, and unlike the younger ones, usually get on in the right direction.

I won't tell them. I don't tell my boys either. I don't see any need to swap them out that often, personally.

Ive got a bunch hatching this weekend, I’d say about 35-40 of the snowie celadon project, maybe 12-15 from my snow angels (most don’t hatch, there’s a lot of double yolkers) and about 50 sex links (I candled this time haha). I have someone who ordered 20 females from the sex links, 3 weeks ago. I contacted them today to tell them everything is looking good so far, and I’ll tell them the exact number if less than 20, and pickup should be Monday. They respond that they only want half and they’ll pick them up the following weekend! I was like no way am I housing, feeding, and caring for your chicks for a week when I’m already stuck with the half you don’t want. We agreed on Wednesday, but I’m tempted to just say forget it. Anyway, I’m hoping for some pretty snowies this weekend, I have 1 bator hatching Saturday and one Sunday.

The ONE TIME I sold a quail, I later found out that the experienced quail person put a 4-week old juvenile into a cage with many established hens. It didn't survive.

Hawaii is a small place; turns out that person is the friend of a friend, etc. My neighbor then offered her a juvenile roo, which I housed and took care of for 3 more weeks before turning it over to her. Last I heard, it's doing well. Still, I'm a little haunted by the loss, which I know was completely accidental.

Yeah, I didn’t clean my shed brooder as planned because my shavings got wet in the rain last week that flooded my shed
