Question? If your hen is consistently laying ginormous double eggers…is this a concern? I hear her every time she lays one because she cries as she’s laying it. I thought I read they may not live as long if they lay them often? Is this true? 22g is even bigger than the last one…they’re just about as big as the Silkie eggs!

How long has she been doing it? I had a hen who laid double yolkers every other day for about two or three weeks, then she stopped. She was a fairly new layer.

She’s a new layer, and just about every other egg is jumbo. I’d say maybe 2 weeks, so that’s good to know! I was starting to get a bit worried about her, they’re clearly painfully big eggs to lay. Poor baby. She’s my sweetest hen by far. I love her 🥰

My husband often helps me get them out and blocking jumpers, but he lost one once, and it went running off the table, bounced off a dog face, and landed in a bin of coats and clothes headed for church haha. He was totally fine, but it’s ridiculous when there’s a lot in there and they all run around randomly.
i’ve found that sort of issue with many different brands of incubators....have to have 2 people to remove chicks and even then things can go wrong. of course my funniest story was with one of my pheasant chicks. i took it out of the brooder and mr muddy was holding it. it ran, fell through a crack in the couch and then scurried through the dog crate (with the dog in it) before we finally caught the little booger! it about gave me a heart attack! 😂

I’ve had such a disappointment today, I had hatched 3 groups of pure celadons crossed to my mixed snowie/pearl/silver celadon carrier group, each 1 week apart. Each group had about 15 birds and I’ve been bringing each hen in and putting her in a test cage alone once she has started laying. When she lays an egg I band her based on egg color with zip ties.

The third group has started laying, I get about 8 blue eggs and 2 normal eggs currently from that pen, and I checked my favorite in the whole lot and she has been laying, so I put her in the test cage last night and she has just laid a big brown normal speckled egg 😭. Since her pattern is basically a cross of pearl and Tibetan, it’s not something that will really breed true, so without laying blue eggs, she can’t stay, I have to draw the line somewhere lol. I had really been hoping she would be a celadon layer, the odds were so good with most of my unidentified layers laying blue.

Here she is:

I lazily blued out my toes and holy sweatpants haha.
