➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I’ve had such a disappointment today, I had hatched 3 groups of pure celadons crossed to my mixed snowie/pearl/silver celadon carrier group, each 1 week apart. Each group had about 15 birds and I’ve been bringing each hen in and putting her in a test cage alone once she has started laying. When she lays an egg I band her based on egg color with zip ties.

The third group has started laying, I get about 8 blue eggs and 2 normal eggs currently from that pen, and I checked my favorite in the whole lot and she has been laying, so I put her in the test cage last night and she has just laid a big brown normal speckled egg 😭. Since her pattern is basically a cross of pearl and Tibetan, it’s not something that will really breed true, so without laying blue eggs, she can’t stay, I have to draw the line somewhere lol. I had really been hoping she would be a celadon layer, the odds were so good with most of my unidentified layers laying blue.

Here she is:

I lazily blued out my toes and holy sweatpants haha.
Oh nooo, that’s so sad! She’s beautiful! Really beautiful markings!

I had a sad day today too, but in the chicken department. My favorite chicken, who deep down I knew was probably a boy…but hadn’t crowed…crowed at me this morning! So now I have two boys and while I can keep roosters, 2 out of 6 being roosters is not wise. So I will either need to buy another coop and more chickens (ideal) or sell a boy…they’re both so beautiful and I love them. :-(

Maybe you need to keep her to make pretty birds?? 🙃
Well.... I have a space problem. Right now I have 2 grow outs, male jail, one pen of celadons and a mixed pen of banded birds. Once I sell the normal layers in the mixed pen, that pen will be my snowie celadon pen and the other will be my sex link pen. The k dales will go in my normal grow out, and I’ll keep the grow out that has wire over a tray as my grow out. I’m still planning some small breeder cages, since I have my black k dale in a cage inside to breed her, for lack of a better solution right now.

Sounds like you need another pen hehehe. My husband looked at me after my favorite chicken crowed and said…you want another Coop now don't you? Poor thing 😆 my bird obsession is full blown haha. I have my eye on one that holds 10 more chickens…

Don't we all have this delima! Except mines with pheasants....but this season, it's quail...at least I have vacant pens for the quail.

These things do not sit still for a second. I haven't raised any in a few years, I forgot just how stupid they are...more so than other quail. Also how they like to bunch up...and no, they aren't cold....just one of their habits.
