My chicks are late! I have one lonely button quail chick. I can see a couple of pips in the calico fee eggs.

There is another chick in the incubator and another zipping. These guys seem to be having trouble zipping. I've had to assist both of these and the one in the incubator after they sat for several hours just poking a larger hole into the shell instead of a proper zip. The other one that has started to zip seems to be doing the same thing.

Both curled toe chicks didn't not make it. Do you guys cull chicks and if so which ones do you cull?

Are you asking about culling chicks close to hatch time or when they're older?

That's a button quail. Looks like it may grow up with the coturnix because the other egg that made it to lock down doesn't seem to be hatching. I'm going to candle again tonight. Six calico fee out.

Hi

This is my first hatch from Myshire (rare coturnix mix). 30 eggs arrived, 1 cracked, so 29 into the incubator. By lockdown time we were down to 20 eggs. Between the 27th and 28th we had 9 hatch. Unfortunately one seems to have gotten stuck in the middle of hatching overnight and didn't make it Out of the 9 that did, 4 had to be assisted as they were all malpositioned. Seemed like a pretty poor hatch rate. Eggtopsies showed that most of the fertile ones didn't make it past day 5. The ones we do have are adorable and doing great though!!

Are you asking about culling chicks close to hatch time or when they're older?

I was asking about close to hatch but the first had exposed organs and curled toes. Second had curled toes but died in about 12 hours.

Neighbor asked me to incubate some chicken eggs and they go in tomorrow. Sanitized my incubator already and my chicks are fine eating and drinking well, no cases of pasty butt yet

My hatch is done. 8 calico fee, 1 button. It's been a while since I had an entire batch of striped chicks.
