➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

$20 a week is for one person averaged out over a year, summer I spend less....but i can't eat cows milk or wheat so that cuts out a lot of junk food. I do get goat yogurt once in a while when it is on sale, last time I bought 5 large containers =$20. lasted 2 months.
just eat the processed foods in stock and don't replace w/junk...harder to do if the other 2 people aren't on board though.
Have you thought of making your own yogurt? I do. Pm me your email address and I will send you the recipe. I got it from the BYC recipe section. You can substitute goat milk for cow milk. I use a thermal bag and quart jars.

And in summer, we have wild raspberries and a wild blueberry bush but I have never eaten any of them. I need to start. DB&FSIL have a big raspberry patch in their yard too cause my grandma planted it a long time ago and they kept it. So I can eat those too. I really should start eating that stuff.

I think there are a lot of ways we can cut back. Like for one just simple self control/impulse control and not buying whatever I see but also making lists and/or doing big shops instead of us all going. And also, maybe more importantly, going to cheaper grocery stores/trying to find deals and not just the closest store. And I think stocking up/buying at once instead of smaller amounts or lots of little trips. But we also eat a lot of meat, dairy, and bread. I think cutting back on or cutting out bread and dairy might be a good idea. Cause we go through a lot of milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. which adds up and really doesn’t do any good. Except maybe like goat milk yogurt or something. But because of all that and the fact that we have 3 people, I don’t think we will ever get down to $20 a week or less than $100 a month or anything like that, but I think we could maybe get somewhat close. But I also need to clean out the fridge and the cabinets because we have a lot of processed stuff in there and also no room in the freezer or cabinets atm. And I think we can also save by cooking way more." [/QUOTE]

Yes, self control, lists, stocking up do help cut grocery costs. Using a grocery that gives discounts for their members who use their store card is beneficial too.

USE coupons to save money on everything from groceries to personal hygiene items like shampoo. My SIL is the coupon queen...she often gets money back from her grocery stores because of her coupon using strategy.

Once a month buy in quantity staples and canned goods.
Plan menus for the week and buy your meat and dairy and fruit, fresh veggies once a week.
Freezing in season fruits and veggies is helpful too.

Thanks
I thought about making it... I was getting chicken feed, pork and goat milk from a farmer.... They had issues and quit most of the selling... The price of the goat milk in the store is more than the finished product.

Thanks, I need to start working on that. And most of our stores here do that, including the two down the street, but sometimes you can get it cheaper at another store even after the discount because it’s a little pricier than some stores, and different stuff is on sale every week. But I think I need to start looking at the fliers at different stores and picking out what’s cheapest or maybe getting some stuff different places if it’s cheaper. And I definitely need to start using coupons. We really don’t at all, I’m not sure why, I guess maybe it seems complicated or time consuming or something, but I bet it would probably save money. I like watching those couponing shows. It’s amazing what people can save. I don’t think I’ll ever be that extreme but it is a good example of what can be accomplished.

That’s a good idea too, thanks!! We have so much in the cabinets already that I really probably don’t need to buy canned goods or boxed stuff for a while haha I really should probably look in all the cabinets and go through everything and both clean a bit/throw out super old stuff, and maybe make something with some of it/actually eat it. We don’t usually eat that stuff despite buying it and some of it I bought in case of emergency lol but then it ends up going bad and wasting money cause no one eats it and sometimes some stuff is in there for years. I just did a big clean not that long ago and a few smaller ones so there shouldn’t be too much if any super old stuff, I got rid of the really old, gross stuff, and I also gave a bunch of other stuff to someone last year, but now they’re full again. Maybe I could post some of the stuff I find and someone will know a recipe for it lol though we have a ton of cookbooks too that we never use.

And thanks, those are both good ideas. I don’t know if we’ll be able to actually stick to a menu, we’re all kinda add/not planners, but I’d like to try. And I need to eat more veggies too. Although sometimes my mom buys the on sale/discount stuff, which is fine but sometimes it’s often already on the way to being bad and no one eats it, doesn’t save any money if no one eats it/buying a million of them, or even when we buy fresh stuff, we never really cook or eat veggies anyway and then they go bad. I like the idea of buying it once a week and actually eating them lol

And freezing is a good idea! How do you freeze the veggies? Just put them in there whole in bags or do you have to cut it up or something first?

That’s unfortunate the farmer stopped selling stuff :(

Don't go shopping without a list or hungry. If you are hungry, look for the healthy options and stick to the list. Ideally, eat before you go.

Treat yourself. A rotisserie chicken is a great treat. Salad and a couple olives. Portion control is everything.

Yeah, I need to work on not going hungry haha but maybe eating regular meals will help. Sometimes I only eat once or twice a day cause I just forget or don’t have time and end up eating my meals way later and then also usually because I am so hungry I snack a ton and constantly snack between meals. Although it’s actually bad, even when I am not hungry, I still snack. I snack or graze I guess like all day and I also have to be snacking when I watch TV even if I am full. I really need to work on all that.

That sounds more like a meal than a treat ha and yeah, I need to work on the portions too cause I always eat like tons and tons.

I have a migraine :(

Thank you! And aw that sucks :( I think mine might be slightly sinusy too. ...maybe I will have to try cutting carbs! I have heard it is good for joint pain/inflammation but hadn’t heard migraines but that makes sense. I want to try cutting dairy, sugar, and possibly grain/bread/wheat/way down on carbs cause I think all of those are bad for it and I hear cutting dairy can really help or even cure sinus problems so I want to try it but I love dairy :hit
Proteins from milk and cheese are good for you. But if you are having digestive issues from dairy, then you might try 2% or try lactose tablets.

Have another migraine tonight but so far is not too bad but my eyes are also really dry (tried putting drops in them, didn’t help much) and my chest is kind of tight/hurts. I think I have just been doing too much.
Too many carbs affect your blood sugars and can trigger migraines.
Have your doctor run an A1C.
My meter at home only goes to a 30 day average, but @R2elk is correct... The Lab A1C is a 3 month average. This will be more telling about your diabetes results.

Yes, need a source of home grown goat milk.
We are becoming lactose intolerant as we age. I'm going to make a small batch of Almond milk yogurt to see if it works.

This may be a dumb question but how do you make almond milk? How does one get "milk" from almonds? I know you can grind them up and make flour. I know you can make a paste out of them/almond butter. But I don't know how one would make "milk". I've drank it before. I like it. I'm just curious. Is it a complicated process?
