➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Ditto. I don't make a hobby out of the wild birds, but I love seeing them at the feeder and hearing their calls. What I really want is a pet crow. If only it weren't illegal.
I had a pet crow many years ago. I wouldn't mind having one now but here it is illegal to have a crow but one can get a permit to have a raven (Federal permit also required).

I just love all animals!! LOL but dogs and indoor pets are more involved and potentially annoying. They need walks and training and lots of attention. Livestock are a lot more self sufficient lol so I get it. Maybe you need a cat or more independent dog. :lau
I like cats. I keep tossing around the idea of a barn cat. The dog would kill an indoor one.
I used to have a few, actually... they were sweet.

You're right, though, dogs seek out attention from humans and I rather prefer passive companionship.

Mine was useless against hawks  but worth his weight in gold for coyotes, foxes, raccoons, etc. and in his defense, I don’t think he saw or heard hawks and he was a house pet, not outside 24/7, so not much he could do against them. Maybe if he was outside when hawks attacked, he would have protected them from them.
Their smell/barking definitely helps somewhat. My dog has free access to an outdoor run that's between the coop and the bulk of the woods. I think it's helped deter bears.

I want parakeets or cockatiels but indoor birds are so loud and messy lol I am not really an indoor pets kind of gal. More so livestock similar to you except the only difference is I love dogs and cats. So I guess I should say I am not a CAGED indoor pet person. Although I HATE cat litter boxes and am technically allergic to cats so future cats might have to short haired barn cats although I love Luna and she is not going anywhere.
I had parakeets for a very long time. I sold out of them recently after the two I got turned out to be absolute lunatics. I have my eye on some of those pretty rainbow finches, though...

Really, I didn't know that. I'll have to look up what the rules are here.

I think there's a specific colour of crow that is only present in the pet market here and is so allowed to be kept. I expect they are incredibly expensive.

Due to the Migratory Bird Act you cannot own native crows or ravens. The only way that you can legally and ethically acquire a pet raven or crow is by picking a species that is not native to the U.S. and does not migrate to any portion of the U.S. The most common corvid species chosen as pets are the white-necked raven a very common species found through much of Africa, and the pied crow, a closely related animal also endemic to Africa.

Pied crow was the one I was thinking of. Thanks.

I like dogs well enough but I really love birds! Not just chickens but wild birds.
Wild birds are so interesting.
I love crows too! Where we used to live I had a flock that would come to my call for the deli leftovers I brought from work. I really didn't have to call bc they would anticipate and watch for my arrival. Arriving home one day when I had neglected to bring food for a few days, a crow flew slowly over my head from behind, close enough that I felt him comb his toes thru my hair! :D I went inside and got them something from my fridge. They have an uncanny ability to train me!:lau

Now we have verified that a horned owl is nesting across the street. I spotted the shape of the owl on the nest - the ear tufts give the appearance of a cat. I have been hearing it for weeks. I love the owls but not so keen that the nest overlooks my pigeon loft.

Yeah that might be a feast for that owl.

You should definitely get some cats!!!

But yeah, I can see where that wouldn’t mesh well with dogs. Although there are dogs that are very independent and catlike :D

Yeah, we had tons of coyotes howling in the woods right behind the coop right after Gator died. Dogs do help.

I have had a few sets of parakeets before but I was young. They are fun but lots of work.
