➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Oh, no! Poor guy. That crazy fur of his can probably retain moisture like crazy too, eh?

Cricket is great! He's an idiot. Still not all that interested in people, but he loves us, so I don't really care. He learned really quickly that the birds were not there for his entertainment. He now ignores them. It's wonderful.

Honestly, though, I've been really excited about the bird additions this year. The Cream Brabanters are wicked awesome, and I added a pair of American Buff goslings. I baby them, and they love me. They are total doofs. View attachment 1797225 View attachment 1797226 View attachment 1797227 View attachment 1797228 View attachment 1797230 View attachment 1797231

That pooch is so freaking adorable! And the Brabanters... I just can't stand it. :love:love:love I want some so bad now. Maybe in the future once my flock dwindles down and I need replacements. ;) But I have enough chickens for now. Dang it! :barnie

5 CX mix , 2 boys, 2 girls and one I am not sure... judging by the combs.
I have been wrong before. 2 eggs that looked good at lockdown to go.

Soon to go under an experienced broody who had eggs develop but didn't hatch. a couple were partially hatched :sick When she went off the nest. Both sets of eggs from the same pen. Hers were from that day, incubator was from a couple of days before.... And these had no power for a few hrs at being of lockdown.

Fluffies! :ya Congrats! :love

You have a great fruit variety!
I can't seem to get a cherry tree past the first year here. I've tried five different varieties.

Elderberry warning! Pick a site where you can mow around them or can let them go wild...
They are slow to get established but will bloom the first season. Then they take off like mad about year three. Mine spread from one 16 foot row of eight transplants to filling the 4 X 16 foot bed by season three.
Then like a monster sent roots out in all directions! Tried to fill 2/3 of the 16 X 20 bed and the lawn around sending runners up into the next 4 X 16 foot bed.
I was constantly having to dig out roots to plant other veggies.
Since the original source is in the back pasture, I had the boys rip out the bushes in the garden. Now I'll be digging/killing the root remnants that sprout.
In my freezer are 10 gallons of frozen berries from last year.
That first photo is the mass of bushes and a flower panicle.

Oh, my! My mom gave me a couple tiny plants. They snapped off her new one in the car, she stuck them in the dirt, they started growing, and already have little bloom pods on them. I had no idea that they spread so vigorously! Thanks for the warning! I plan on having them in the orchard where the chickens will be. Perhaps they will enjoy eating them?
Growing up, we were only able to grow pie cherries. The place we bought five years ago has a HUGE Rainier cherry tree. It's loaded every year. I'm going to graft a couple limbs onto my ornamental plum down in the field. It's healthier, and I think it'll be neat to have a bunch of pit varieties on one tree. An Italian prune graft took off really nicely this year!

I love this so much! It seems easily doable for us. We may try this.
It has worked out great. Even took a two foot snow load without damage.
I did stain the boards on the inside where the roofing panels are attached to protect them from any moisture. I also had to use silicon to seal up some leaks on the clear panes. Overall, though, a really solid and affordable hoop house! The milk stand that my dad built over thirty years ago resides under the overhang on the window side. The window swings outward, and up to open.

They're a super fun group. You would not regret it! I will keep you posted on how they develop as adults.
