I was of course needling you. I don't take on wild babies either. Glad to hear the parents are still around. Give the little one a better chance.

Yes, you can. She is using her wings to elevate even with her hop to the top. Barbed wire should help.

We have babies hatching in the barrel today...two duck hens in the nest and you can just barely see one duckling under the buff hen. They are both talking and the white duck came up and over the top of the buff hen to attack me when I tried to snap another photo.

And there are two hens on this nest too. The one on the left is facing us. The one on the right has her head turned to the back of the nest. They are both hissing so not sure if they are hatching today. Sometimes a third duck hen joins this nest and hisses too.

Babies here... babies there... babies, babies everywhere! :ya:ya:ya:love

And thank you. I hope we won't have to clip but I will if I have to this time around. I really don't want one of my dogs to get at her. We ran 1 strand and are going to see how that works. Originally he said that he wanted to run 2 but technically he IS supposed to be working from home today so he couldn't stay away for too long. So we did 1 strand for now and can always add another strand if we are still having an issue. :fl

floppy fence helps too.. Something like chicken wire not secured the top 6 inches. They land on it and flop back in.
At night had a coyote jump the 4' e net that was off in the winter due to snow. He didn't go up to any coops, but went to jump out the other end. Tracks showed jumped up on the 6' field fence that is not secured at the top and kept falling back in. He finally made over at the corner. It's mate stayed out and was running up and down the field fence line LOL

I'd probably order from Ideal knowing how quick shipping is from TX to TN. Plus, they are known to have really nice EEs. But visiting the local hatchery means no shipping woes and they've done well for me so that's what I've gone with every time. I still drool over the wide variety at Ideal. :drool

Ideal does seem like a nice hatchery!! Their minimum is pretty high though I think and they’re kind of far from me but maybe they’d still get here fast ha if I ever need more chickens maybe I’ll go there. Maybe get a separate layer coop for selling.:lau

So here is my chicken story of the week:
I go jump in my truck a couple of days ago to go to work. Of course there is a hen grazing in the front yard, no big deal, they know to stay in my yard. I start the truck up, do my usual seat belt fix my purse, and briefcase so it doesn't fly all over the truck while I drive like a crazy woman, etc. Now the truck is warmed up and I start to drive away. The hen is standing on the side walk watching. Now I am wondering what she is up to. As I drive by and look into the rear view mirror, I see the hen dart across the street and head right to my neighbor's garden. After all my bragging about my well trained hens, I had to stop in the middle of the street and run her back home.
Now I am wondering if they do this on a regular basis when they hear the truck leave the house!!! :th:th
