➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

She has an entire live plant in her tank. :gig
When she gets a bigger tank I’ll give her more plants and give her current succulent a break.

Rodents are much more work than reptiles, in my opinion.

That’s awesome!!

Although I was thinking more along the lines of sprouting greens to eat like people do for chickens :lau

Since you worried about her eating outside greens lol

Thanks that makes sense. Thinking about it, I think you are right because I remember when I had a rabbit and even parakeets the cage cleaning was a lot of work and had to be done pretty often. Plus of course they need interaction/companionship. Not that reptiles don’t but still ha

Although... can you teach reptiles tricks or anything like you can birds and rodents? :D

I actually think I might be less allergic to reptiles too. I was gonna get gerbils, even have the supplies, but then someone was telling me they’re ridiculously dusty. So I think I would be allergic to that. So I haven’t yet. Course I also just put off buying them/never got to it but now I’m glad I did that cause I found out soon after about the dust.

I’m not good with dust and fur and hay and stuff haha

Although I did also worry about the salmonella or bacteria or whatever from reptiles and touching them.

Idk.

I would agree. Small mammals have more daily upkeep imo although reptiles have higher upfront costs.

That makes a lot of sense. They’re definitely a lot of work and I actually found when I had caged animals I was worse about their care than I am about the chickens or animals I have to go outside for which should theoretically be more work. But the chickens are actually super easy haha

Do leopard geckos need the UVB bulb or just a heat bulb/mat?

Sounds awesome. :love

Carpet sharks are awesome.

thats exactly how he is. Always taking toys and hiding them in or under the couch. It burrows into the couch and loves a pool noodle

Haha that’s awesome!! He sounds amazing. :love

I’ve always wanted a ferret but they (and rodents in general) freak my parents out. Plus I’ve heard they smell really bad??

She gets fresh vegetables every day, so I’m not sure why I’d put myself through the extra work.

Not really, that I know of. Some can learn their name. They’re intelligent though and will learn through conditioning.
I swear IV can hear the sound of a worm container being cracked from miles away.

Gerbils are flighty and very bad chewers.
Rats are easier and more personable.. and I could tell you everything you need to know and more about husbandry. ;)

Chickens are infinitely easier to care for than any rodent/weasel/lagomorph I’ve ever owned. The little furries are all about cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.
Shoveling out a chicken coop every now and then doesn’t even compare to the amount of spot cleaning, deep cleaning, laundering of bedding, and litter training you will do with the others.
Not to say they aren’t worth it. Just that so many people get small, crappy cages for their rodents and never clean it out and wonder why their house smells like piss.

Leopard geckos are nocturnal so theoretically only need an under-tank heater, but a UVB will make them prettier and healthier.
Finn is the most low maintenance animal I’ve ever owned. Ever.

He is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. :love

there is a ferret odor but hes not bad

That’s good to know. Thanks.

I may have to get some eventually ha but not anytime soon.

I went on vacation in the 90s and had good friends checking the cat and ferrets.
A few days after I got home I couldn't find my checkbook. I was wondering if they moved it. I finally found it in a hole in the underside of the couch, with a dead smelly mouse I was looking for.

Oh boy!! :eek::th:sick

Ferrets aren’t rodents.
They eat rodents. :tongue

Males smell worse than females, but every ferret you can find in the USA will be desexed and descented. This means they can’t express their scent glands (like a skunk), but they can still be a little oily and musky.
Not hard to control with regular washing of bedding and litter training.

FYI, most ferrets need to be kept with other ferrets. Ferrets like Peter and da weasel are exceptions.
