Jaxson looked down at Amy's hand and thought carefully before answering. "I would love to, Amy. You know I would. But as you said, the fact remains that Vanessa hasn't talked to you and isn't probable to any time soon. It hurts her, you know. She knew I came here yesterday. She probably knew I would come today as well—"
"But she didn't stop you," Amy interrupted quietly.
"No," Jaxson said slowly. She had a point. If Nessie really hadn't wanted him to come, she would of made it clear.
A thought now occurred to Amy. "How come you are able to come in the middle of a week day, two days in a row?" She asked. "Are you not still doing the position your parents got you?"
"There was an incident in my sector day before yesterday," Jaxson said honestly. "Vanessa got me nearly a week off because of a minor injury." He stressed 'minor' to keep worry from Amy.

just realized how bad this looks to an outsider, specifically Artemis ;) )

Artemis noticed the muffins wouldn't be ready to be taken out from the oven for a couple more minutes, so she washed the dishes that piled in the sink while waiting for the muffins to cook so that they could be served.
(Right?!)

(when I spill the beans, it'll be obvious. And fun ;) Oh, and is that why Artemis is so upset with him? :p )

"What kind of incident?" Amy inquired.
Jaxson took a swallow of his lukewarm coffee before answering, somewhat hesitantly. "Someone escaped," he said. Dropping his voice, he added, "a Contender with information that was vital to current plans." He eyed Amy closely, searching for a reaction.
Amy stiffened slightly and pulled her hand away, placing it on her lap. "Sounds exciting," she said without much enthusiasm. She knew well who the aforementioned Contender was. But was he aware? Artemis had kept to the back the majority of both his visits and she never loitered long enough to be recognized by face. Amy looked up at the clock and suddenly wished he would leave. This was stupid, not to mention dangerous, thinking they could simply be friends again. He, a guard with the CMI, and she, a secret friend and host of Contenders. She quickly followed her lackadaisical reply with "Is your coffee good?" in the hopes he hadn't caught onto her hesitance.
"Yeah, really good," Jaxson replied, holding the mug up for effect. "Actually, can I get another to go?" He pulled some cash from his pocket but Amy brushed it away.
"Yes, you may have one to go but no, it's on me," she said with a smile as she stood to go get it.

(No, your characters aren't the only ones with secrets ;) )
Artemis finished drying the dishes as the timer went off. Throwing aside the towel she had been using, she quickly pulled out the muffins. Using a knife to remove the steaming muffins from the pan, she set them on plates and served them to the customers.

(Ooh :p )

As soon as her back was to him, Amy's smile faded and she wearily went about getting the coffee to go. "How are you holding up?" She asked Artemis as she entered the kitchen.

"Fine, but there are still items that need to be brought to the customers that haven't yet been made." She replied respectfully, although she had been struggling to keep a few customers calm as they became angry at her for taking so long; but she knew that Amy's conversation with Jaxson was not one that should be interrupted.

"I'm really sorry about leaving you so long. He's preparing to leave," Amy said, holding up the now filled coffee cup. "Let me get this to him then I'll be back in a jiffy to help you."

Artemis nodded silently as her gaze shifted elsewhere; she wished Amy could understand why she felt the way she did, but she feared talking aloud would cause her heart to break the same way it did when she first found out.

Amy hurried out with the order. "Here," she said quietly, holding it out to Jaxson who had stood from his chair to leave.
He took it and thanked her but didn't move from the spot immediately.
Amy looked at him expectantly, unsure why he was remaining but not saying anything. To speed him along, she walked towards the door and he followed, as she had thought he would. "Stay safe, okay?" She smiled softly, looking much more relaxed than she felt.
He leaned forward as if to embrace her, which he did somewhat, but mainly to whisper one word in her ear: "Cameras". He then turned and walked out.
Amy stood rooted to the spot for a minute, immediately knowing what he meant. When she returned to help Artemis she was flushed and more uneasy than she had been minutes before.
