I was given some eggs on Monday and after candling I have 7 I think are due around the 4th. Not exactly sure just how far along there are because they had been under a broody at another farm. But from my experience they look to be on day 7-10. Might lockdown just a little early to be sure. Also my beilefelder eggs shipped Monday from Skywalker. Should be here Thursday!:fl:wee
Yay!!

Candled my eggs last night pulled 7 3 clear and 4 blood rings. Not bad. Did I remember to mention that 7 of these are copper marans? I am excited to see what we hatch. I have been helping a friend get a breeding pen of marans together and these are the first eggs we will hatch from them! I am a little concerned that the stock we got our start from is not top notch but I can see potential so we are moving forward

Mrs. Tweedy is broody... Again

This is the second time in two months. We gave her some of the bantam eggs from the bantam light brahma and I’m not sure what bantam laid the other egg.

Blue Footed Booby still has no chicks hatching out of her eggs, but I believe they will hatch soon. I candled them all yesterday and got half inch thorns stabbing me everywhere. She definitely picked a good spot for her nest.

So how many chicks are you hatchlings in total??

An unplanned number. Lol! My goal is to have 2-3 hens and 1 roo of each breed as I want to sell day old chicks next year. The breeds I am hatching are mostly ones that you cannot find in this area. Everyone has farms tore breeds here....and only the more common farm store breeds at that (RIR, Orpington, Wyandotte, Barred Rock, EE). I already have 5 people that want chicks next year and have had no problem selling the ones that have grown out that I don't need this year.

Your doing what I plan on doing. I've used this spring and summer to get the breeds I want that are harder to find in my area to hopefully sell chicks next year. I'm doing lavender Orpington, Beilefelder, standard cochin, mottled Java, barnyard turken, silkie and working on showgirls.
How do you advertise if you don't mind me asking. I know there are a lot of facebook groups and such. But just wasn't sure where to get started. Do you ever use Craigslist?

So I did this thing...

I put coturnix quail eggs under my broody chicken Mrs. Tweedy

Here is the thread about that hatch, I will post on this thread as well:

I am hoping to have: Bielefelders, Marans (BCM, Wheaten, Blue Birchen, Gold Cuckoo), Lavender Orpingtons, Legbars (CCL and Opal), Speckled Sussex, Bresse, Barnevelder, Silverudd, Deathlayer, Welsummer, Tolbunt Polish, and Salmon Favorelle. Some of these may have to wait a year. I only had 1 hatch out and survive in my Salmon Favorelle hatch and only have 2 speckeled sussex that I am unsure of gender yet. And some I still have to hatch (and cross my fingers) - like the Deathlayers....I only have 3 viable out of 6 and they are on day 4. I have on my list for hatching next year to add to my variety: Swedish Flower Hens, Aracuana, and anything I don't have enough of after this years hatches. Depending on what my daughter wants to do, I could also do silkies and svart honas (those are her 4-H birds and I am not sure if she wants to sell any that may compete with her at the fair). And depending on what hatches from my son's assorted bantams mix, I might be able to hatch and sell some d'Uccles, Olandsk Dwarf, Pyncheon, and Duckwing Phoenix (also for 4-H so up to him). I will also cross some (Marans x Legbar, Legbar x Silverudd, etc) to get some olive eggers and mint eggers.

I have not really started advertising yet. I have just told a couple of friends that I know have chickens what I was doing and they all said to get them a list of what I have because they would like to buy some. I will probably put a flyer up at the vet clinic and will post on the area swap facebook page (if it is still up and running by then). I will probably go to the swaps too. I might use Craigslist too. Word of mouth will probably be my biggest advertising.

Just found a great deal on some Salmon Favorelle eggs on ebay....and yep, I bought them.

The ebay seller that sold me the Swedish Flower hens eggs in June (that USPS totally ruined) is also sending me a dozen eggs for just the cost of shipping.

Would love to get my DH some more melanistic pheasant eggs where this last hatch was a total bust....but they are few and far between on ebay and cost an arm and a leg! I've seen auctions for 6 eggs go as high as $80!
