100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

What weight did you all have?

At 7 weeks we processed 4. They were all in the 3 pound range once fully processed.

Broiler Update:

All of them are doing great and growing. I didn't put them outside because it was too windy. I had a jacket and hat on to keep warm, so I know that they would have been cold.

I weighed 1 this morning (before eating) and it weighed 1 lb 0.2 ounces. So, they are at the 1 lb mark. They went through a whole lot of feed. IT was so fast, I hadn't made any more yet. I have to make more when I get home from work. I think I"ll have to buy 2 more plastic containers since the FF consumption is increasing. I think I"ll get 2 more containers at Walmart today.

I called around to the different meat markets and grocery stores to get a price on the cost of broilers per pound but there are no local stores that sell broilers. Does that sound right? :idunno

That is very weird... That is what most meat markets sell. Just ask them how much they sell per pound for chicken. It is 99% chances they are selling broilers.

Ok. I'll try calling back. A few of the meat markets asked me what was a broiler. :th :/

Agreed, that is what the chickens are that you buy at the market.
WOW!!! 50? That's a lot. Sounds like you all had a great ending number. So you all were able to put 42 in the freezer? How often do you all eat them and how many do you all have left?
We usually cook a chicken every weekend and have leftovers 1 night. I figured we will be done with the 42 by the time it is time to butcher again. I have given a few to family - makes a nice gift.
Also on your containers, I used a huge tote (probably held 20 gal), dip out what you feed, I usually fed at least half, then put new feed in, add water to cover all, give a good stir, add more water if needed and ready for the next day. The FF that is left will help ferment the new batch faster.

I thought it was kinda strange that they didn't know what a broiler was. Then I said, "CHICKEN" and they said, "OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH ok." :idunno

I plan on giving some to my family and friends. Do you have more than 1 freezer? I had to buy another freezer just for this year's meat.

What are some of everyone's favorite broiler chicken recipes/ideas/dinners?

Would you all say that it takes longer to cook a broiler as opposed to cooking a hen?

It may be just me, but I would be wary of a meat market that didn't know what a broiler was. The meat market I go to costs more then grocery stores but less then health food stores and can tell you everything down to where the meat was raised and the age at butcher. (With the exception of their part time cashier... she knows nothing but how to run the register.)

My very favorite recipe, go camping and put cut up chickens over the fire. It smells wonderful, tastes wonderful, and dang we have 2 more months of winter here. Love campfire cooking!
