12 chick minimums at the feed store

I know a WHOLE lotta people over the age of 18 who have no business having animals! And never fear, the chances that the actually vote are somewhere between nil and none!

I sort of got into an argument at my local Agway about the minimum. They have a 6 chick minimum, although as far as I know there is not a law about it in Vermont. They just said "we think you should buy at least 6."

So... how does this law protect chicks?

Buy 6 chicks, toss 3 in a plastic bag with a rock, toss it in the local lake. Minimum order solved.

Buy 6 chicks, hatchery sexed as females, and never mind about the 6 male chicks that THEY tossed in a plastic garbage bag to throw out (or do they grind them up and turn them into something useful?)

Debeaking - not illegal, either. Battery cages - that's ok too. But, only 4 chicks, that's a problem.

Many ways to work around the law, but it sure does seem like a *bird-brained* way to think you are "protecting" chickens.

SORRY, I KNOW THIS IS THE CHOIR BUT THIS ONE IS JUST SO STUPID I END UP FROTHING AT THE MOUTH A LITTLE BIT!

I would say that when he told you he could bend the rules for a purchase of 3 if you had an existing flock is a fairy tale. Since when can anyone legally "Bend the rules"? If nothing else I'm sure you could find someone to go in halves on a purchase that might be easier than dealing with the "Feed Store Rules.

good idea...but how about we give them a test before they ever become a parent! Better yet...just give teachers a ray gun..we could zap the ones that shouldn't be allowed to reproduce!

PS. This post also inspired me to finally look up the Vermont laws, and there is no law about chick minimum purchase here. I searched on poultry, chicks, and eggs.

There is a section that says that you may be charged with animal cruelty if you:

(9) knowingly sells, offers for sale, barters or displays living baby chicks, ducklings or other fowl which have been dyed, colored or otherwise treated so as to impart to them an artificial color, or fails to provide poultry with proper brooder facilities;

Now, that seems like a reasonable law.

It is funny that Agway enforces 6 chick minimum even though it is not the state law here. One more reason to go to the local feed store instead!

New Hampshirites, you can come over to Vermont if you just want to buy 3 chicks. There is *no* state sales tax on chicks, either!

I wonder if he meant that if they can prove I am adding to a flock that the inspector will overlook the sale of only 3. This is based on him talking to the other feed store owners who were inspected. I will have to ask him next time for more details.

I always buy about 3 times more than I need. I raise the rest to point of lay and sell what I don't want. It is apretty easy solution and re-coops the costs that I have into the ones I want to keep.

well I bought 25 chicks from attwoods a while back. But thats rediculous,I've never herd of such. Some people dont want a big flock. Before its over with, a persons noteven gonnabe able to own a chicken.

I do believe this is to stop people from purchasing a few chicks for kicks around easter & then not wanting to follow through on raising them. You'd be surprised at how many bunnies and single chicks are taken home for the Easter basket and then later let go or dumped. I imagine this is what they are really trying to avoid. If the chicks didn't come in around the holiday I imagine that such a law would be less necessary. Chicks look cute, but people don't think about them growing into chickens. Makes me

when people are so short-sighted.
