Based on comb development and color at 12 weeks, I want to say all pullets... but their hackle feathers are suspiciously pointy and shiny, and their faces are quite red. Your help is appreciated!

Thanks for the reassurance! Crossing my fingers and hoping you guys are right.

Hi, Pretty pullets! Aren't these ladies just so sweet and smart? Our 39 PR are only a week older, but some look EXACTLY like yours with the light and dark feather mottling, all with pointy type hackle feathers. A few of our girls are mahogany dark, but, have black (green) iridescent feathers on wings and tail feathers (in different amounts) and a few do not have red faces yet, but, they are all definitely pullets. We have some PR cockeriels who are 4 weeks old now who will eventually integrate withe girls, but even at this age, they act SO different than the girls did already, and I feel that their bodies overall seems more lanky, sleek and muscular. Also, they all have a bit more comb than any of the older girls have even now. This might help clear up about the pointy feather difference between the males and females: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...nderstand-hackle-feathers-and-saddle-feathers

I do like them quite a lot! I would say they're more skittish than my other 3 (EEs), but they're definitely not mean as some people have described PRs. Hoping they will start laying (and not crowing!) around 23 weeks... 2.5 months to go!

Any crowing yet?

Yes, I agree… haven't had any mean RIR so far, thank goodness. Just a few of our younger chicks are a bit shy/ skittish still, so we're trying to interact with them more, hopefully to keep everyone well socialized.

Here's some of our older girls- you can see they have small, slightly reddish combs still at 14 weeks. However, our younger bunch (6 weeks) our tiny roos have more of a comb than the older girls do, and they're half sized. Their necks have more black feathers, back is flatter, and more sinewy/ lanky/ muscular in build, blacker tail feathers, and bigger legs and feet compared to the pullets of the same age who are smaller and softer looking. All of our tiny boys have these things in common, including neck bristling and hopping at each other already. Not looking forward to 5 am crowings! lol

No crowing, at least not that I've heard (though I'm gone at work for a large part of the day). At 14 weeks now, they look pretty much the same as they did at 12 weeks. No additional comb or wattle development. They seem a bit... ditzy compared to my EEs, but I'll forgive them for that if they are good egg layers. :p
