15 chicks, DOA

I was hoping for some reliable layers that are friendly and easy going. I ordered Australorps, Wyandottes, barred Rocks, ameraucanas, and welsummers. I’m open to their breeds that have these traits. Where are you located?
I am in Stockton. When I ordered from mcmurrays they wouldn’t send less than 25 until after May 1. Then their minimum is 15. I got the ornamental layers and all were females. I am hatching out some silkies but I have never hatched silkies before. I have been told they can be tricky to hatch.

I am really sorry for your loss but I would NOT blame Meyer. I received 37 chicks in the mail today (ordered 30)...actually was about to post about my babies and saw your post. Terrible!!! However, I wanted you to know all my chicks are alive and well. I also received an order days before Xmas, 26 chicks no losses. All from Meyer. I am in the KC area however but still, it sounds like you got the exact same delivery time I did? I am so sorry that happened to you but it sounds like a postal issue for for sure. Wishing you the best on finding some place local.

So very sorry for the loss of life and your unhappy surprise. I can affirm that Belt Hatchery (Central Valley) is a good one to use. We order from them for the feed store and have always had a quick overnight delivery to San Bernardino county. They should have the breeds you want. You could buy 25 and grow them out just a bit and sell the extras to offset your costs. It will not be too cold to ship within the state right now.

Oh wow! I am so sorry you lost your babies, Nanili, as I am now anxiously waiting for our chicks to arrive! They are on their way from Murry McMurry Hatchery in Iowa, and they are due in tomorrow morning here at the Hanceville, Alabama Post Office!! I have been tracking them (box of 29 babies) religiously since they left the hatchery yesterday evening and I have this awful feeling about what it will be like if they arrive dead... :(

I'm so sorry, it may be the the hatchery. I've ordered chicken's through the mail from mypetchickens and they all lived through the process. If you ever try to order chickens through mail again I would check up on their location and call the hatchery to see if they are ok. Hopefully this helps.
My Pet Chicken is a middle man. Sounds like the issue was USPS. I think it's hit or miss with the postal service employees caring about live shipments.

I don’t blame them.

I’m sure they will be fine. I wish you the best!

I only want 8-10, my plan was to give away the other five (15 was min shipment, and I figured I might lose 1-2), so 25 is WAY too many! I have a day job

I’m glad you have your babies. That’s great news!
