15 chicks, DOA

Sorry for your loss. Are you close to Gilroy? If you are, Farmer's Feed on Monterey Highway sells chicks from Ideal Hatchery. There's also Silva's in San Martin on Santa Teresa, and I think their chicks come from Belt Hatchery, which is in California. Sam at Sam's Downtown Feed is also a good person to talk to, he does a lot with 4H.

So sorry to hear about that. I admit my fear of opening a box to find dead chicks is why I just stick with whatever breeds my local feed store orders. I'm happy to pay the mark up for them to deal with chicks that don't make it.

As far as where to look for chicks, try your state thread maybe?

Really sorry this happened to you, I would be upset too and definitely looking for local. If you don't mind sharing, what hatchery did you order from?
Meyer Hatchery, but I don't blame them necessarily. Once it leaves them, it is up to the post office to value the lives of live animals and take the necessary precautions. The chicks were all perfect and beautiful. And dead.

Thank you! I am in Santa Cruz, so yes Gilroy is close. We are headed up to Sonoma this weekend and my boyfriend is looking for places to get chicks up there because he can't stand to see me crying on Valentines Day over my dead chicks.
