2 chickens with bumble foot

Hey all. I just tried to perform surgery after reading many tutorials and watching videos. There was no "kernel" in my chickens foot, just a lot of pus and I nearly passed out. Anyway I found another chicken with bumble foot after and now Im not sure what to do. I don't think I can handle another surgery. Could I try giving penicillin? Should I see how much a vet would charge or should I just put the chickens down (which I really don't want to do). Any advice on fixing the bumble foot with out surgery? All help is appreciated.

I had 2 hens with "scabs" under their feet; no limping, no redness, no swelling. Some said soak in epson salt & warm water, surgery, I was not about to do it after watching the video & learned my Vet would. Locally I was told to "leave it alone" but keep an eye on them, added more shavings into the enclosure (DLM). Kept an eye on them, one who had one on each foot cleared up in a few months. The other still had her scab but it wasn't bothering her so let it go. I never did anything....

Is yours limping? Swollen? Red & hot? Are you sure it's bumble foot? Picture for others to see & advise. Hope you got the surgery foot wrapped well, change bandages often & watch for infection. The more experienced will be peeping in to help....

I will post pictures tomorrow when I change the bandage. They are both limping, swollen and warm not really red though. I think I will do like you said and just leave them alone now. At least the one that didn't have surgery, now I will have to keep an eye on the one that is open. She is sleeping in the bathroom tonight. I am not sure it's bumble foot but after all the research I assumed it was.

Swollen & warm is not good, signs of infection. Would it be possible to take them to the Vet? Hope someone else steps in soon. Pictures would help, hope they get better....

Thank you. I will call the vet tomorrow and see if they will see them. Do you know if it's common in ameracanas? I've never had this problem before and now both of mine have it.

If it is very mild put Vetriyn. It helps a LOT. As far as severe goes you will more than likely need to do surgery. the vet visits will run you some cash so just be prepared.

Hi! I'm new here, just signed up and have only had my chickens for about 8 months. Everything had been wonderful until about a month ago and now I can't seem to catch a break and am a bit stressed out. I've had 2 broody hens and I am currently treating one of my buff orp hens for bumblefoot with epsom salt soaks and bactroban ointment and wrapping. She has been such an amazing sport. Started treating 4 days ago, then last night saw that she had a place on the other foot. Neither of her feet are swollen, nor red, nor hot. She is not limping. I'm starting to feel as if this is a hopeless cause and am so worried, although she is acting perfectly normal. I'm wondering how long I should keep her kenneled and in my basement. I didn't want the areas on her feet to get more bacteria in them so I have been keeping her inside during most of the day and night. She is allowed to free roam with her sisters in the afternoon when I get home from work until bedtime. She also has not laid any eggs since this started. I just assumed because I have her kenneled but not really sure. Is that normal? Should I just "see how it goes" and stop messing with her feet. She is eating and drinking as normal as well as her poop is normal. If anyone could help guide me on how to proceed. I have read many threads on here about bumblefoot, but I am still feeling nervous about the whole thing.

Oh the vet said they don't see chickens there. Can I get the vetricyn at Atwood's?
